I've been looking at one way flights to the US for June- I know it's an expensive time of year to fly but they often seem to be ridiculously expensive. I don't know why it costs more than a return flight when most of the cost is the tax airlines pay per passenger, per journey. Anyone have tips on what works out to be cheap and airlines that have good extra bag allowances? Best quote I've found so far is £535 Bristol to Boston via Dublin on Aerlingus.

I don't have any tips that could work out cheaper but that's not a bad price, also if you are going via Dublin or Shannon you will do your POE at ether as they have US CBP Officers in those airports, & I think that you also do your US customs there as well. If you have a look on the airports website there is a video done by the US CBP.

Roundtrip is usually cheaper but apparently it is 'illegal' according to airlines to not use both parts of the ticket. The price you got there looks really good to be honest

Most people buy round trip and cancel the return if that is the cheaper fare. When booking, pick your return for midweek. Try different return dates and you might find cheaper fares on different dates.

Other than booking a round-tip and picking a date when you think you might want to return for a visit so you can use it, (does no one except me need to go back and visit?) or just cancelling it, you can look at using frequent flier miles to get a cheap or free one-way. If you have any that is, sometimes you can buy more for cheaper than paying for an actual ticket. I did 7 trips to Austin before taking to plunge so i have oodles... Btw flying mid-week is generally cheaper and buying the ticket on a Tues can be cheaper too.

I usually look for Tues/weds flights as like you say it tends to be the cheapest. I was going to use my BA Avios then saw they wanted a grand for a single flight lol. I remember ages ago someone saying there was an airline that is reasonable for one way tickets and it was cheap to have extra bags, any ideas? It wasn't a UK or US airline.

Does not look a bad price to me, I paid about that for LHR to BWI return and then cancelled the return half later on. I go back and forth a bit and it's usually around £550 return.

It is quite good compared to the other day when I was looking at £8-900 but I haven't decided on an actual date to fly yet. Was going to be the last week of June but just saw the Libertines are doing a reunion gig on July 5 so might have to put it off by a week!

I've booked mine for early July with Aer Lingus, it cost £481 one way (though I've paid for an extra bag etc so the total fare was much more...but eh...)

You know you could use those BA Avios on a one-way flight on Aer Lingus, right? It's 25,000 airmiles return Dublin-Boston, so 12500 one way plus fees and taxes (usually £70ish). You'd also have to book the Bristol-Dublin flight separately but that should be cheap enough. You could always try to get BA to include the little flight if you have enough Avios, though they've never done it for me.

Can't remember if you were the poster I spoke to about this previously, sorry if this is old info!

You can use avios point with Aer Lingus? This is news to me (very very good news as I flew frequently with BA to America/Asia with my work)

Aer Lingus I have found to be the cheapest by far. Cheapest I found was £350 from Glasgow to O'Hare. I had also heard that Tuesday flights are cheapest.

I always assumed one way flights were dearer because essentially there's an empty seat on the return flight (maybe not, I'm not an expert)

I have my interview on May 9th, and am hoping to also fly out early June.

(P.s. Interesting to note, if all goes well with my interview, we also have planned our wedding for August 8th)

Yes you can! It's also MUCH cheaper than redeeming Avios on BA flights, both in terms of how much Avios you have to spend and how much money on taxes etc.

To do this, ring up BA executive club booking line and just tell them the flights you want. The exact dates/times might not be available so you might have to be a little flexible but I've always been satisfied and always got a flight within a day or two of my 'ideal' plan. If they try to charge you the £25 phone booking fee tell them you want it removed because you were unable to book this flight online so phoning in was your only choice, they'll do it without any fuss.

As mentioned in my previous post, the only niggle is that they've always been happy to let me pay for the Dublin-Boston return segment with Avios, but not the Cardiff-Dublin return segment. So, I used to book the big flight with Avios and just pay for the little flight myself, usually around £100. The catch there is the flights will be on separate tickets, so if there's a problem catching the connecting flight then they're not obliged to put you on the next one...and sometimes they won't check your bags all the way through either. That being said, I've never had an issue, apart from Aer Lingus's habit of constantly changing flight times in the weeks and months leading up to the flight :P

Saying that, I didn't dare try this trick for my flight moving over there as I will have two suitcases plus a big carry on. I didn't want to have to panic about re-checking myself and the bags in as well as all the POE stuff and potentially miss the connection. I spent my leftover Avios on our honeymoon instead :)

I think Iceland Air flies from England to the US, right? We were able to get exactly half of the price of a round trip, single way fares from Denmark for about $400 a ticket I think?

Try checking out Skyscanner - they give you loads of options to search on and will hunt for the cheapest across pretty much every airline you can think of. Plus, you can put a price checker on that emails you when it goes up/down.

Yes, SkyScanner is excellent if you're flexible on travel arrangements. Select 'whole month' to see the best prices over a whole 30 days' range or more. You can filter by airline too if you have favourites.

I always find the best prices this way and then take them to my guy at the Flight Centre since they price match and often beat it.

I see this Norwegian airline popping up a lot these days and although I haven't flown with them myself I have seen plenty of unfavourable reviews online. Anyone flown with them to the US?

I surprised her with a proposal in Los Angeles, and this is how it went down!
