Hi!

I am soon to start the process of DCF with my same sex American partner and he suggested I sign up here and follow some forums.

At the moment we are waiting for the UK government to release a date whereby we can convert our civil partnership to a marriage and we will then start the application.

If anyone else is in a similar situation it would be good to hear from you

Yes indeed they did but that is only for single partners. Those in a civil partnership need to wait until their CP can be converted into a marriage. The US does not recognise CP for immigration purposes only marriage certificates. The only other alternative would be to dissolve our CP in court but that requires you to have just cause for dissolving and since we don't we would be committing perjury.

The uk have said that those in a civil partnership will be able to convert to a marriage "by the end of the year" but have not provided an actual date yet which has triggered some couples to go down the legal discrimination route. We are just going to sit tight and hope the government are true to their word...

I'm sorry, I wish I could help. You'd probably find more people in your situation if you posted in the UK portal, and mentioned your "civil union to marriage" issue in the post title.

You were in the same situation as we were. We were civil partnered in 2007. Yes marriage is now legal here in the UK but unfortunately the government have kept up with the speed of change and they have stated it will be the end of 2014 before they make it a possibility to convert a civil partnership into marriage.

We didn't want to wait and therefore we flew out to family in NY and got married there (They don't recognize our civil partnership as being legal) so we had a marriage, then flew back to the UK and applied via DCF.

Might be worth you considering its much quicker to file DCF by the time Government here catch up and change your civil partnership into marriage you could feasibly be nearing the end of the immigration process?
