There will not be a major shooting war over the islands IMO so long as Japan says it will hold the islands with force. A mistake made by Thatcher regarding the Falklands.

There was the Budapest Memorandum, which Russia is in violation of.

That agreement was to keep us and Russia out militarily and politically, we have trampled all over it since before 2004.

The whole purpose was to assure Russia we would not get involved there in exchange for Ukraine's independence and eliminating their Nuke program.

We agreed because at the time we were happy to see those Nukes eliminated..... after the thrill of that was gone we moved right in with our NGO's

The agreement does not obligate us to defend Ukraine, only to stay out politically and militarily.

The memorandum included security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine as well as those of Belarus and Kazakhstan. As a result Ukraine gave up the world's third largest nuclear weapons stockpile between 1994 and 1996.^[2][3]

Russia blatantly violated Ukraine's territorial integrity and is thus in violation of the Budapest memorandum. But no worries, Russia's economy is about to collapse. Economic growth has already come to a screeching halt and a recession is all but guaranteed at this point. They failed the seventh time in eight weeks today to find any takes - any takers whatsoever - for their Russian sovereign debt. Seven failed auctions in eight weeks - money is getting tight in Russia. Russian companies cannot raise capital anymore either. It's gonna hurt soon enough.

I don't see how an NGO violates Ukraine's territory. Plus a lot of NGO's do good things.

IF you believe elections and administrations can and are bought in poor countries you might agree it would be unusual for a neutral country to invest 5 billion dollars for the purpose of reorienting the direction of the poor country.

Some times the military is used to remove the head of State and other times it can be done through monetary means.

If you were Russia would you feel the USA kept their agreement?

We both invaded, we did it with lots and lots of cash and not Russia honored a principle of the UN by letting the independent crimea chose thought own political direction.

You might very well be right about sending a wrecking ball through the Russian economy.

BUt I would caution you to do what Obama never did......think how Putin might reply to that.

A man like that could cause a lot of mischief in this dangerous world.

Precisely. The unchecked arrogance of the US administration, and its sheep following media would make one think that these islands are just rocks to the Chinese who would let them go over sanctions and pursed lips of the democrat US party. It just ain't gonna happen. How f'ing naive the youth of America is these days is beyond the pale. Speaking talking points from late night shows and political hacks over the lives of human beings.

To us, they are just rocks please educate me on why that seemingly barren place has so much value to China?

Geology, oil, tactical and strategic advantages, and most important the people of China would give their lives to make sure that the Japanese will never see another victory as long as the sun shines. Yes, they hate them that much
