Obama: Senkakus Covered Under US-Japan Security Treaty

In an interview ahead of his trip with Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun, Obama said that the United States regards the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands as falling under the purview of the U.S.-Japan security treaty and that the United States would oppose any attempt to undermine Japan’s control of the islands.

The statement naturally drew protest from the Chinese foreign ministry. ”The so-called US-Japan alliance is a bilateral arrangement from the Cold War and ought not to harm China’s territorial sovereignty and reasonable rights,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang noted.

“The U.S. should respect facts, take a responsible attitude, remain committed to not taking sides on territory and sovereignty issues, speak and act cautiously and earnestly play a constructive role in regional peace and stability,” Qin Gang added.

Obama’s statement is particularly significant because it is the first time that any incumbent U.S. president has overtly stated that the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands fall within the purview of the U.S-Japan security treaty.

The naming of the Diaoyu Islands stands firm and in the face of the slimy rapist, murderous, two faced bastards who killed mothers, and children by the tens of thousands in Nanjing. A Japanese head on a pole will not make up for the little known and recognized atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in 1937 onward.

No. They are not all dead. While I worked in Nanjing, China I toured the Hollocaust Museum in Nanjing. There are many who are still living who can tell the awful stories or what took place in those days. I talked with them, I met with them, and ate with them also. For the Chinese then, and today, these small rocky islands represent everything to them and also to the CCP. They will not let these islands go because a whacky American president without a clue says so. This is not a diplomatic issue. It runs to the core of every living breathing Chinese on earth. They will never give up and will never surrender these islands to the Japanese. I know this doesn't make sense to a Western mind, but you can be sure it's a riveting issue with the Chinese people.

First, I was referring to people who committed the acts not the victims. Also those islands appear to be meaningless to China 40 years ago. Its clear the only reason there is even a dispute is because of possible natural resources below the water.

As with any dispute the bottom line is how much support you have on your decision. This issue pales in comparison to having a nation of islam monument built on the world trade center site. There is just nothing on earth, whether in legal or logical means that will allow the Japanese to take possession of these islands. There is a lot of talk about a sleeping tiger, and Chinese on human rights, but on this, they will never yield.
