You just wont be able to collect interest without a ssn. As long as you provide it eventually, you will get your interest. For us the interest rate on our checking account is trival so we lose out on like 25 cents a month or something.

Before my wife had her SSN, the bank would only let me add her to my noninterest bearing accounts. Which was good enough at the time, as I just wanted a debit card in her hand. Silly me, almost three years later and she's rarely ever used the dang thing, instead asking me to withdraw cash for her spending money. What the heck, it works for her and she still has the card in the event she needs it in an emergency.
