SSN in hand but...

It has a print on it that says 'valid for work only with DHS authorization'.

Am I still allowed to use it to have a joint bank account? Would I be able to change my last name on it by mailing my documents to the closest SSA office instead of going there? They happen to be open when my husband to be is at work...

You can use that for a bank account. To change the name on it you need to go in person. You can go alone. I would personally wait until you have your GC, then go and change the name and get the "valid for work only" wording taken off in one fell swoop. Good luck.

AOS for my husband

lately many that try to change their name before the green card comes, are getting rejected, as the new name is not in the database yet.

Sorry to piggy back this post but just curious the valid for work can be removed if you have your green card? My hubby just got his green card this past month

I think you have to show your green card and SSN. Your green card shows you're here legally and I think the writing will be removed once your status changes (ex: become American).

Here it says I can also mail it: https://faq.ssa.gov/ics/support/kbanswer.asp?deptID=34019&task=knowledge&questionID=1995

But I'm not too sure anyone did it like that. So I'd be better off using this SSN with my maiden name, file with my new last name for AOS and then once I have my GC in hand bring that and change SSN? I hope it won't be a problem that I'll have mismatching documents for a bit...

(Also on a completely unrelated note, are you in the Gold Stitches fashionistas group on FB? I'm pretty sure I saw the same icon... sorry if this was creepy.)

You can mail it per the web site, but do you really want to trust your green card in the mail? Also you're required to carry your green card, although few actually do for fear of losing it.

Make sure you file your AOS with your married name. Once the database is updated, then you can get your SS card updated with the name and removal of the note.

My wife an I waited until after our wedding to get the green card, so it started with her married name. But our state gives the name after marriage right on the certificate, so the SSA allowed it. Yet when we returned to get the note removed from the SS card, the database still was showing her maiden name. The agent at the SSA was able to request they update that, since her green card came with the correct name.

Yes when the green card arrives, he can get the "valid for work only with" note removed.

Yes, apply for AOS in your married name, then go back to the SSA once you have the GC and change it all. It's okay to have mismatched docs for a while.

My bad! I thought I could just send a photocopy of my documents by mail. Thank you for the useful information!

One can hope? Oh well, an extra trip to the SSA office it is.

Yay, learning new things! No longer out of the loop!

That will depend on the bank, but if its an interest bearing account, expect issues opening a joint account if one of them doesn't have a SSN or ITIN.
