Can we Travel to Canada?

My wife file for 751 to remove the condition on her residency back in March. She has already done the biometric and received the one year extension.

We are planning to travel to Canada by car since I leave in NY state. She normally only use her Green card but it is expiring on May 3rd.

I went to the USCIS office they suggested bringing her passport so that they can stamp the green card extension.

Since nothing comes easy in my life once I got home I realized that my wife's passport expires on May 10th.

Now here is my question. I am planning to go to Canada for a wedding on May 20th. Should I go to the USCIS office and get the stamp (even though the passport will expire soon)? or should I just use the expired green card and the one year extension letter to cross the Canadian border?

Getting another passport is not an option because it could take up to 2 months.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=593&t=16 indicates that an alien with a green card requires a valid passport to enter Canada.

There is an option to expedite a passport renewal in Canada. It costs more money, but it would probably be worth it for your situation.

22 Jan 2013 -- packageSent
31 Jan 2013 -- NOA1 from NBC

6 Mar 2013 -- I130 transferred to Orlando local field office (which started the whole nightmare)

Mar 2013 to October 2013 no one would tell us where our case was or what was happening. I suspected the whole time it was just sitting in a corner somewhere in the Orlando field office. I was pretty much right.

October 2013 - get congressman involved. Congressman asks USCIS repeatedly about our case but they won't even tell them anything.

31 Jan 2014- finally get NOA2!!!! (we think the nightmare is over!)

NVC

Our case was not sent from the Orlando field office as it should have been. The nightmare continues. We kept calling NVC and asking if they received our case, and they always said "NO" and that we had to wait 90 business days for it to be received. We called USCIS during this time and they kept telling us it had been sent. After the 90 days of agonizing frustration, NVC then started telling us we had to wait 120 business days. I got our congressman involved again, and they told the congressman it was sitting at the Orlando office this whole time (just as I thought it was!).

22 Apr 2014 -- NVC received
16 May 2014 -- NVC case number assigned
24 May 2014 -- AoS and IV bills paid

28 May 2014 -- Sent AoS and IV Packages

6 June 2014 -- documents scanned

18 July 2014 -- false checklist from NVC

21 July 2014 -- Case complete

28 July 2014 -- receive case complete email from NV

30 July 2014 -- interview booked! September 11 here I come!

We have travelled to Canada several times by land with just the green card alone. That's why we never paid attention to the passport. I wonder if I can cross the border by land with the expired green card and one year extension letter? They have never asked us for the passport when we cross by car just the green card.

You can try. It's what I was initially going to recommend, until I saw that their official site asked for a passport too.

Do you really want to risk this though? What will you do if they suddenly ask for the passport?

That's interesting. I am ALWAYS asked for my passport when I go up to Canada. I always give them my green card, and they always ask for the passport right after. This is crossing at both the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie/Buffalo and the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara. You never know if this could be the one time you are asked for it.
