There is no "earlier" unless someone cancels their existing appointment.

If an earlier date were to become available it will appear on the left side of the dashboard, you will have to cancel your existing appointment to grab that new date (if someone doesn't grab it before you do), if someone gets it before you but after you cancel your current appointment you could very easily lose both and be without any appointment until the embassy releases the July calendar.

You can view an earlier date (if and only if there's any available), on the left panel of the home page (https://cgifederal.secure.force.com/).

A "May" appointment can only happen when somebody cancels their appointment. A very rare possibility, but you will have to be really extra super duper patient to keep checking. As others say, it can be gone in a blink of an eye, as I can imagine hundreds of people eyeing an earlier date too. Once you see an earlier available slot, you will have to cancel your first schedule (which is a risk) to be able to avail of another interview date.

Re-scheduling can be done twice without penalty.

Yes, I suggest keeping the firm date. We debated on this as well back in January...opted not to take the risk of losing the date we had. Use the time to make sure your package is perfect and you have everything covered that the CO might ask for.

A few days ago the embassy posted some available dates in May, which was 5,6 and 8. My Mom's original schedule was suppose to be May 15. I was able to cancel and change her schedule on May 8 together with my Dad. I got lucky because there were only 8 spots left. So I suggest that you might wanna ask first if there are a bunch of spots available when rescheduling because you might loose your spot once you cancel your sched. Good luck! :)
