So I've been at NVC for almost four months now, and for some reason, the paperwork is never right! And, because I'm going through an Embassy (Bogota) that isn't eligible for electronic processing, it has made the process downright torturous. I just recently had a newborn son with my wife, and I've been here in Colombia with them while this is all going on which means I have to physically mail everything, wait three-four weeks just for them to tell me everything is wrong, thereby delaying everything until some magic date, that god only knows when it will end.

The problem is the I-864 now. I sent them three years of tax returns (2010-2012), and I requested an extension from the IRS for 2013. To compensate for not sending in the 2013 return, I included a current paycheck, which details my salary per year and all that. So, I'm going to try and call and plead my case with someone there because I just can't seem to get it right - and sending snail mail internationally is just agonizing.

As you can imagine, I am beyond frustrated and I don't have a good feeling that this will ever end. How could something as easy as sending a form be so time consuming and tedious in the year 2014? Unbelievable.

Why don't you post what you are sending and have people vette it so that you won't waste more time?

You need to comply with what the form asks, and no more, no less.

For proof of income on the I-864 (which is the only problem), this is what I sent:

- Signed and filled out I-864

- Copies of my tax returns from 2010-2012 (according to how i understood the instructions, it says your most recent filed tax return, plus up to 3 years before that was optional).

- My current pay stub, to prove that I still am employed and earn the required amount

They are asking for my 2013 return, which I wasn't planning to file until I got home to the states (next month), and I've already got an extension approved by the IRS for that. So, why wouldn't the return from 2012 and my current pay stub be acceptable?

This is my suggestion to you. I would call NVC and request that you be case complete and casefile sent to Embassy. This is what I was instructed to do after we had issues with our documents and was told by supervisor (You have to ask for supervisor).

So won't hurt to call and ask.

Thank you for that -- I mean, this is what I've been thinking all along - I'm here, I can bring whatever else I need to the Embassy when its time for the interview. This going back and forth is taking forever, and while I do respect the fact of doing things the right way, I am just really frustrated of seeing the email from NVC come back with another checklist.

I know this is a little off topic - but when I went to apply for my son's passport and birth of record abroad about 10 days ago, the Bogota Embassy staff there was FANTASTIC, and I didn't even need all of the required documentation (they didn't look at very much). They said his passport would be ready on 28 April, I got an email this afternoon saying it was ready for pickup TODAY (super excited!!!). Something very, very wrong with this picture.

2013 taxes are due now, so you would at least need to show that you filed for an extension for 2013. Did you show that before?

Make sure the tax returns are complete.

If you are qualifying based on your current job, then a letter from the employer or 6 months of paystubs would show proof of current income.

I went thru the same thing, the best thing you can due is file a 2013 tax return. Nothing else will work. They dont read anything else, they dont care about your extension, they dont care you in Colombia. All they want is your 2013 tax return.
