WILLARD, Mo. (AP) -- A hand-grenade a second-grader brought to his school for show-and-tell is blown up by the Springfield bomb squad.

School officials confiscated the device Monday after the boy brought it to Willard East Elementary School, northwest of Springfield. The school was evacuated until after bomb squad members exploded the Vietnam-era grenade in a nearby field.

A highway was also shut down.

Fragments of the grenade were sent to a lab to determine whether the device was live.

School officials say the child meant no harm.

February 16, 2006 - USCIS accepts the motion to reopen without an additional fee - finally something goes right! We should hear from USCIS St. Louis office within 2 weeks.

April 3, 2006 - Received welcome to America letter in the mail!

April 8, 2006 - Received GC in the mail - done for 2 years!!!!

March 1, 2008 - mailed off I-751

March 3, 2008 NSC delivery confirmation

March 10, 2008 NOA 1

March 28, 2008 Biometrics appointment

Legal Permanent Resident - just waiting for time to pass for him to have eligibility for citizenship.

It could have been one of those novelty, dead grenades.

No, it was only 2 years ago, I was old enough to know better ;)

My mom and I were talking about it and we can't remember. She seems to think it had the pin still in but for some reason my Uncle, Dad, and Brother (all military guys) thought that it wasn't a danger. My grandfather was EXTREMELY safe with things like that (he was in WWII just as a sidenote) so I know he would never leave something that dangerous just sitting around in his garage. Although, he was a big gun enthusiast and had them in ever corner of the house (even some up the chimney, I bet there are still some in there somewhere...) so who knows, I wouldn't put it past him to have hidden it for some reason!

Springfield? Isn't it the town where Homer Simpson lives?

Springfield is one of the most common city names in the US (not THE most though). That's why it was chosen for the Simpsons.
