Hello,

This may be the most common sense crazy to read question, but do I have to change my wife's last name on all of the AOS forms? Common sense says "Yes, of course", but I was curious...

For example, for the AOS, I need to use the G325A again. I should probably do a new one because now her last name is changed. Right?

If You Want all her documents to come in her Married name then yes change it to her name now. Because it's a pain changing the name once the documents are done.

If she wants to use your last name going forward then changing it now is the best path forward. She does not change her last name on old documents she used before she got married. That is why there is the "other names used" section. This typically applies to women as they are the ones that typically change their last names when getting married or divorced and the USCIS uses that section to keep track of all names used by a single person. My Grandfather had the also known as (AKA) listing the several combinations of his first middle and last names as he was born with First Middle Last, but for most of his adult life he went by Middle First initial Last and I do not believe he legally changed it, just signed documents and had a DL in that name.

So complete the current forms in the name she wants to use from this point going forward and list all past names in the "other names used" section and you will be good to go.

Good luck,

Dave
