TORONTO (AP) — Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the boxer whose wrongful murder conviction became an international symbol of racial injustice, has died at 76.

John Artis, a longtime friend and caregiver, said Carter died in his sleep Sunday. Carter had been stricken with prostate cancer in Toronto, the New Jersey native's adopted home.

Not exactly a choir boy he was twice convicted of murder yet gets off due to shoddy police work, the benefit of time and lack of a clear cut case.

Failure to convict is not the same as being found innocent.

While much evidence condemned him, the standard "Beyond a reasonable doubt." is a high hurdle to cross when retrying a case for the 3rd time.

Early life[edit]

Carter was born in Clifton, New Jersey, the fourth of seven children.[1]He acquired a criminal record and was sentenced to a juvenile reformatory for assault shortly after his 14th birthday. Carter escaped from the reformatory in 1954 and joined the Army.[1] A few months after completing infantry basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he was sent to West Germany.[2] While in Germany Carter began to box for the United States Army.[2]

In May 1956, he received an "Undesirable" discharge, having failed to complete his three-year term of enlistment.[3]He was arrested less than a month later for his escape from the Jamesburg Home for Boys. After his return to New Jersey, Carter was picked up by authorities and sentenced to an additional nine months, five of which he served in Annandale prison. Shortly after being released, Carter committed a series of muggings, including assault and robbery of a middle-aged black woman. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was imprisoned in East Jersey State Prison (formerly Rahway State Prison) in Avenel, New Jersey, a maximum-security facility, where he remained for the next four years,[3] and spent time in the Rahway and Trenton state prisons.

The man is dead. It is not the time to condemn him. You are pathetic.

Don't be too hard on Danno. When it comes to black people, I really think he can't help it. Like it's a nervous tick or something. If it isn't negative about us, he will gladly come in and provide a "counterbalance" or say nothing at all. I just pray for him.

Who said anything about being a choir boy? HIs record is well known. Are we to be forever judged by our mistakes? If that's so, didn't you steal something? Should you be held to the same standard that you hold any minority?

We're not even off page 1 of this thread and it's already heading down a familiar dead end. :(

R.I.P. The Hurricane.

Did you expect something different? I didn't. I wanted to pay my respect because I watched the movie and followed him after he got out of prison.

I'm an eternal optimist. ;)

That, and I hoped that any derailment might be delayed until at least page 2 or 3, out of respect, or a surfeit of Easter Sunday dinner.

Me too, but being here I don't expect any quarter given. You know what you're dealing with when someone takes time to disrespect MLK when he's not the topic of discussion.

Dylan at his best.

We might not agree politically but thank you.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried

The crime was murder 'one' guess who testified

Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied

And the newspapers they all went along for the ride

How can the life of such a man

Be in the palm of some fool's hand ?

To see him obviously framed

Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land

Where justice is a game.

One of Dylans best songs and lyrics. RIP Hurricane
