Traveling internationally 2 days after GC interview

Hi all,

I would love to get some advice on this. We have our interview scheduled for May 20th and really want to travel to Canada Memorial Day weekend (24th - 28th) for our birthday trip. We live in Boston, so we would drive (5 hrs to Montreal). The problem is I am not a Canadian citizen, so I would have to apply for a canadian visa and hope to re-enter the country on AP (which i haven't received yet).

SO my question is, what is the likelihood of me getting a stamp (I-551) in my passport the day of the interview so i can travel? Is there a way to request this stamp if the interview goes well? I'm just afraid I won't be able to travel until I get the actual green card in the mail and then I can't take off work to go.

I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Filed: AOS (apr) Country: Australia
Timeline

It depends entirely on the office and the officer on the day you go, it us by no means guaranteed nor is it that you will be approved on the spot in the first place so it is pretty risky.

It looks like you applied for AP, you should have that in plenty of time for your trip. You should have it in April or early May.

I just looked up travel requirements and as a Jamaican citizen I will need to go through the stressful visa process which includes having to pay for a visa as well as biometrics to enter Canada. I'm now thinking it might not be worth traveling to Canada before I get the green card. :(

Hi the other thing to consider is that if you get your EAD/AP Card before your interview they will probably ask for it back at your interview, as it won't be of any use once you are approved.

I guess it depends on the IO but I never had any problem. I asked for a stamp after the interview(AOS) since we're traveling to Canada the next day. I got a 30day temporary stamp and crossed the border without any hitch.

January 18, 2012 - N400 sent

Biometrics waived

April 25, 2012 - interview/ same day oath ... officially a US Citizen!
