If you have some reasons for me to believe the conflict was over religion, please share, in fact you might and should know more about it than me so I welcome your insight.

Just because two side are a different faith, race or language that does not mean the conflict is based on that.

The history of Catholic persecution by the Brits is well documented. People were persecuted, executed and generally treated like scum for not having the right spiritual leader here on earth for many hundreds of years. You could go ahead and read up on it if you were interested.
