What is up with Brazilians and "Thanks God" or "Thanks, God"

Now I really need to pay more attention to my students (the majority are Mexican and Puerto Rican). I guess because we mostly speak English I don't listen to the 'ache' but I'll try it... ::

Mano is actually also used in portuguese, with the same meaning. In Funk language we say mano for the guys and mina for the girls.

And to be honest, sounds really ridiculous...

I guess only people from Spain can make fun of Puerto Ricans, because if anyone else do, they'll say: "But we have American citizenship..."

Yep, con-flei. For brazilians is the same that every razor blade is called gillete even if it's not a gillete razor blade. But my point was more of the fact they turn english words into spanish and you mix that with actual spanish at their speech velocity and you have "wha? wha? wha?"

But that is not Englishism, that is associating the name of the brand to a product. It is quite normal in any languages.

Yes, all cereals mutate to con flei... And all the nose tissues are klínex, feminine stuff are kotex and tampax...

In some places (like my hometown) beer is birra (as in Italian) instead of cerveza...

I admit that our language skills are a real mess because we started borrowing or mutating English words into our Spanish... Like Palkin (parking), estoquiao (stuck) tripiando (tripping) and the list is just endless....

It's all very good though, I love the people here.

Rey, I know that is common and all that but that was just one more example on how it's not as easy as knowing spanish to talk puertorican. Luis keeps saying I talk like an old lady, all formal.

I'm Brazilian... And I think Brazilian people say "Thanks God" because God is HE. And we learn that "he, she, it " uses "S" in the end of the VERB. So, if

He loves ...

She eats...

It breaks...

Why I can not use "Thanks God"? LOL

Maybe because the right sentence should be: I Thank God ???

I heard they use a word in PR that is close to "parking"....I think it's funny.

In Uruguay they call all sneakers "Champions" because that was the first (American) brand of sneakers to be introduced to the country. They also call razors gillettes and I thought it was weird at first.

My Puerto Rican students use a word for pregnant that I had never heard before...I can't even remember it. The biggest problem I have at my school with language is that the Puerto Ricans say "cojer" as if to catch something but the Mexicans have a completely different understanding of the word
