I just wanted to vent for my canadian husband. His greencard still not here, his social security is so screwed up - after his 3rd visit to Social office where they refuse to help him, they claim he needs to bring in an I-94 (he is cr-1) he explained he doesn't have one, they wouldn't listen.

I've never really seen the guy mad like REALLY mad until this morning after coming home from their office. He also got bit by a spider so he's on the couch with a big swollen leg and I guess we'll find out just how good his "immigrant" healthcare we bought online is if it doesn't get better.

Anybody know if we can just go to another social sec office? Our local office after 3 tries is still blaiming him for their typo (wrong address) and even after speaking with supervisor (who INSISTS that he has an "I-94") I just don't know what our next step is. His greencard is still MIA so I don't know if we just need to wait for that and THEN go back to social?

They gave him a print out with his # on it, but said he has to come back and show this fantasy I-94 before they'll issue the card. :(

Sorry to hear about your troubles. :( Just thought I'd let you know that my Permanent Resident Card didn't arrive until the 26th or 27th of December, though I entered on the CR-1 on October 26th. And I still haven't received my Social Security Number either.

Hope you're able to work things out soon!

It can be really frustrating. I'm sorry. Did you try in a different SSN Office? I remember people getting different results from different offices.

mdyoung seems to be the resident VJ expert on SSN stuff, give him a PM. Is there a 1-800 # one can call to explain/complain about ur situation, since a supervisor would not listen?

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Sorry to hear so many people are having problems with SSN and Green Card. It was very simple here is Wisconsin. Had both within a month of arriving.

Yesterday I got my drivers lic. switched over. Just needed ID some proof of res.(bank statement with my name on it) that was atleast 30 days old and$18.00. Can't do car registration here. I have to drive an hour into Madison to do it but shouldn't be a problem. They just need registration, plates and about $100.

Now I just need a job(hard to find in a rural area) and some decent yogurt that does't taste like it has a lb. of sugar in it and the color of bubble gum.

The high fructose corn syrup thing is so true.

Get him to print this out: I-94 (from the US Customs & Border Protection site), and take it into the office to show them that people with immigrant visas don't need one.

OOOH Why didn't I think of that?! I've been busy trying to get a job (which I got YAY) and I started the new job so I haven't been back to read your responses. I did a print screen of the first paragraph of the I-94 so it is REALLY BIG and I printed it and highlighted the "EXCEPT" and "aliens with immigrant visa"

he can't wait to go back and show them that they're out of their heads...!

they really would not believe him that there was no I-94.

and the beat goes on.
