Hello K-1 Visa friends,

I am confused. Each time I read something different about SSN. When we shall apply for it?

1- First thing after landing in USA?

2- After getting marriage license?

3- After applying for Adjustment of Status?

Can you please share your experience and what and when is the right time to do this.

Many thanks

Good luck everyone :)

Answer will be 2. You will need to provide original

Marriage license. You will also need to show i94 while

Valid. Passport too. I took my birth certificate just in case.

The right time to do this is within the first 74 days you are in the US. Wait two weeks for your information to get updated in the database then go apply. Do not let them tell you you cannot, because many employees are not knowledgle on immigration with a K1.

If you do not get the SSN within the first 74 days you will have to wait till you get an EAD (permit to work).

The benfits of getting a SSN is that some states want (says requires) a SSN to get married. It also makes it much easier to get a State ID, insurance, bank accont, etc.

Naturalization

4/3/14 - NOA1 receipt date

4/4/14 - check cashed

04/29/14 - biometrics date

07/01/14 - interview date

There is no requirement to show a marriage license when you apply for a SSN.

Valid I-94, with at least 2 weeks before expiring, and passport with K-1 visa attached is all thats needed.

I've read to apply 2 weeks after arriving (gives the system time to have your details in there from your arrival at POE).
Then get married,

Then you can go back to Social Security and change your name in the system (this is not an official name change, just updating your SSN details), they might not issue you a new card with the new name

Then apply for AOS, make sure to fill the forms out with your new surname! :)

No need to wait for 2 weeks after POE as the I-94 is now electronic. Retrieve it here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

SSN guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

You need to bring your passport with visa, filled-out SS-5 and I-94.
