Kinda like property insurance is an anticipation that your property will suffer an insurable loss someday?

Nope.

It's risk management, that's all it is.

A prenuptial agreement can, for instance, define pre-marital assets without the expense of identifying and resolving them in the event of a divorce proceeding. They are also useful for equitable division of marital property, conditions of separation and temporary support while the proceedings are underway. They're not very useful for defining spousal support - perhaps for a short term marriage, but it gets murkier for a longer term marriage.

Exactly ! Well said !

Yeah, but it's not very romantic.

We managed to avoid the whole pre-nup problem by using the brilliant strategy of neither one of us having anything at all of value. :dancing:

Neither is a will.

But it's a hell of a lot better than your spouse having to probate your estate upon your death.

Sometimes, quite honestly, planning for the unforeseen, albeit unpleasant at times, demonstrates considerable care and concern for your loves ones.

Thats how my first marriage worked. We fell in love, we were broke, all was easy. We really loved each other and mostly enjoyed 15 years together, but people change.

We were very civil about the divorce, and basically divided debt instead of assets.

Now I have others to think about, and I am approaching this from a responsible point of view.

It was only discussed once with my fiance. She listened then said "sure, no problem." and that was it. My fiance really respects the fact that I care about my parents well being. My parents did not ask me to do this, they trust my decisions. This is exactly why I am getting the prenup. I believe it is a mature responsible way to approach this relationship and my specific situation.

As far as romance. This has nothing to do with that. I love romance and display it in many other ways. I am not offended by this comment, It is similar to how i felt 20 years ago.

This is just my personal story and view point here. Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the advice on the trust and legal assistance.

You definitely need legal assistance with this. I assume that you are the US citizen. Are your parents' assets in the US? If so, instead of a pre-nup, you might consider establishing a trust and putting all of their assets into that trust, with you as the trustee. (It also might solve some probate problems when the worst happens, hopefully a long time from now). A lawyer with trust and pre-nup experience should be able to help determine which route is best for you. Good luck.

I was going to suggest that too. A trust is a much better idea.

A pre-nup is a must if one party comes to the marriage with substantially more assets. It has nothing to do with trust and communication, Relationships fail, and cross cultural relationships fail at a high rate. If you don;t want to give half of everything you have to another person after two years of marriage. Get two attorneys and hash one out.
