Unable to change name on Social Security Card

Hi, I just recently arrived on a CR-1 visa and wanted to change my name on my SS card which I have gotten a long time ago prior to getting married and getting a CR-1 visa. I never changed my name on my passport in my home country because it was a huge hassle and we thought that it would be easier to get it changed here in the U.S. But when I went to the SS office, the lady at the counter told me that I have to talk to Homeland Security first to change my name on my SS Card. I don't understand why. I was going to wait until after I remove the conditions on my green card to get my green card on my married name because it would cost a lot of money. Was the lady at the counter wrong? Has anyone had this problem before?

I don't think she was wrong as all information has to match with USCIS system. My friends were just talking about it and said it cant be done if your GC is on your old name.

You can only have one name. Right now that is the name on your green card. If you wish to change your name you have to do it on all your documents. Your social security card, driver's license, green card, etc. should all have the same name.

So should I have my name on my GC changed first before changing it on my SS Card?

You should have the same name on all your documents. You can't have a social security card in one name and a green card in a different name. You can wait until ROC and change the name on the green card then without paying extra or you can pay to have it changed now.

You should be able to change the name with the marriage cert as proof of name change document. See this post.

Guys, I called the SSA earlier and they had told me that there should be no problem changing my name on just my ss card. I went there and got it changed no problem. So the person at the SS counter the first time was wrong. I will be receiving my new SS card with my married name in a week. My GC is still in my maiden name. I will be changing it after we file for ROC so we don't have to pay extra.

P.S. I only had to bring my Passport with the visa on it and my marriage certificate.
