My husband got his drivers license when he first came to Oregon, but it expired with his Visa in fall (I believe it was in late September but I don't remember exactly).

He got his employment authorization card at the end of March and now wants to get another driver's license.

Will he have to re-take the written test? I've searched and searched the Oregon DMV site and cannot find a clear answer. I saw that in another state, a person does not need to take the test again as long as they've passed the test within the last two years - does anyone know if this rule is common in America? Has any one else had to get their license for a second time in a short period? And if so, what was your experience?

Thank you so much for your help :) You guys are always wonderful (L)(L)(L)

You will need to call your local DMV office directly and they will be able to tell you.

Each state is different. I have had a full, clean UK Driving license for years. I am now living in Mississippi and had to take both the written and driving test all over again. I passed first time.

From quick glance, if he has never had a DL issued in the USA, he will have to take a written and driving test... Florida was like that too as my husband had to take the tests. He found them easy so just a pain (and the cost of course)

call them and ask because every state is different..

Yes this is the best option.

I was told so many times that because I held a UK license I would just have to swap my license for a US license. My friend drove me to the DMV office and I was told that I had to re-take the written and the driving test. I was not happy LOL!!!

That said, each state is different. your hubby could be lucky.

However, if he does need to re-take his test it is very easy. He can study his written test online and practice all the test questions... this is what I did. And my driving test itself consisted of me driving from one end of the parking lot to the other. It was weird to say the least. But never the less I walked away with my US driving license first time.

Totally depends on the state you're living in. I am from NZ originally. I have held a California license (sat full theory and driving test) transferred it to a NY license (straight transfer) where it lapsed. Upon my return to the US (Texas) I have had to re-do the full theory and driving test again.

But I was fine to drive here on my UK license until my EAD arrived to be able to apply for a TX license.
