Haha I don't think I've lived here long enough for many southern things to stick with me before I move thankfully.

I'd have to save SoCal is probably on the list of places I'd never want to live. I hate hot weather, the beach, the dry-dessert like heat. I'm happy to be moving to Portland haha much more similar to the climate I'm used to :P

I love the assumption about being used to cold weather! I'm asked that quite frequently in Colorado, but seeing as I'm from Victoria and the west coast, it never, ever snows here, nor does the temperature ever truly get that cold. I've yet to experience a true Canadian winter. :X

Oh, and then there's the assumption by people here that Colorado must be snowy and freezing all the time. Then I have the pleasure of telling them I'm in Boulder, there are more sunny days than rainy days in Seattle, and snow regularly melts before noon if it does fall, haha.

Yep people have always thought that since I have lived here in Colorado for so long, how is it possible I am not used to the cold by now. I have to inform them that when it snows, it's usually gone the next day, we have over 300 days of sunshine and it's not unusual to get into the 60's and 70's in January at all.

Then I also have to inform them, to watch out for April/May Blizzard Season as well. We've always had the 3 seasons here. Summer, Winter, Spring/Fall, Winter and back to Summer. It's the way it's always been.

Even though I'm originally from the North East (or kind of) Southern Ontario, I've never been used to the cold. To me if it's under 75 degrees, I'm wearing a jacket. Everyone here laughs at me and they all call me the worst Canadian ever...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I love cold weather!! here in Managua Nicaragua, its hot and hot for half the yr..then the other half is hot and wet,lol I went back to Saskatoon in February and was greeted with -50C with wind chill temps for a few days---loved it!! -10C would have been far better, lol Off to Quito Ecuadoe this summer and the high temps is only around 25C and gets very cool (not freezing) Can't wait.

San Diego has great temps all yr round as well! Was liek our 2nd home when I was in the Cdn Navy! Lots of great stuff to see and do as well.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ugh I am so so homesick right now! This thread is actually making me feel slightly better, reassuring me that this feeling is normal!

I miss the food, and saw that Canadian Chinese food was mentioned...oh I could definitely go for some sweet and sour chicken balls right now!

Most of all I miss my family. I really hope to get back home for a week in the summer to see everyone!

Yes I'm a dry heat person too. Humidity sucks. I had enough of that in Southern Ontario in the summer and Austin and central Florida as well.

As with the Chinese food, I still don't get why there is a huge difference in how it's made in Canada compared to here. You'd think it would the same as many of the people are using the same recipes? But I can go anywhere in Ontario at least (the cities I've done it in anyways) and get (Mixed Meat Chow Mein or sometimes called Combination Chow Mein), and it uses the thin pan fried noodles, it has shrimp, thick twisted squid, chicken, beef and a great sauce. Here if I get it, it's either sort of limpy fried Lo-Mein noodles which is so wrong, chicken, beef and shrimp, but misses out on the squid which is the best part.

It's two different worlds with how the food is between the two countries. Can't wait to hit China Town in Toronto when I go back in Aug for a visit...

Dag man everyone is hatin' on our Chinese takeout! Come to New York, we have awesome (and cheap!) takeout :content:

I was in Toronto and I ordered fried wontons. They were like $5 and I was expecting them to be meat filled, all I got was a bag of wonton chips, no meat, and some dipping sauce that wasn't sweet and sour sauce. I ordered sesame chicken, and none of the chicken was fried crispy and smothered in sauce, such a let down, and I ordered some dumplings and I only got 5? And no boneless spareribs!? Everything was so expensive, I was so pissed! My fiance thought I was so weird until I made him try fried wontons here (only $2.50, by the way!), and I took him to a place where the dumplings are 4/$1 (Prosperity Dumpling, Chinatown NYC, very grimey looking place but so worth it!!).

My fiance says he won't miss Canada's Chinese takeout at all. He says he'll miss Smoke's Poutinerie the most, the quietness, the not-so-condensed population, and being able to walk around in the middle of the night without worrying about his safety (seriously, who DOES that!?).

I don't mind the frappe's but I prefer a weaker coffee flavour which is why I really like Tim Hortons, at least their iced caps anyways.
