As someone who a) is half-pasty-white and half-from-an-ethnic-group-that-gets-all-the-free-stuff-HOLLA; b) an Ivy League graduate; and c) also a legacy student at said Ivy League school, I am perhaps perfectly placed to dispel some thoughts here. First, it was my status as the child of an alumnus that gave me a much bigger boost than being a sad ragamuffin of an ethnic stereotype. (My SATs, grades and AP scores were still impeccable; my advantages by birth were but the cherries on top of my scholastic sundae.) Second, high scores alone do not guarantee admission. The Ivies look to admit well-rounded, interested, interesting and intellectually curious students. What may be quantified is often not enough if the student is rather dull as a person. Ivies want the weirdos, the kooks, those who think big and sometimes fail. It makes for a far more rigorous and vibrant learning community.
