What I didnt know about filing for a SS card

So I am feeling a little foolish for what I "thought" I knew about my husband receiving his social security card. I thought that when the DS 260 was completed it asked if he wanted to receive a social security card, meaning that we did not need to again go through a process for that. I have been trying to find out for the last week how we can confirm that it is being processed just to find out today that it doesn't start until he applies.....how could I have missed that!?? :oops:
