In highly controversial remarks, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav today said there was a need to change the anti-rape laws as “boys commit mistakes” for which they should not be hanged.

“Ladke, ladke hain. Galti ho jati hai (Boys are boys. They commit mistakes),” he said at an election rally in Moradabad.

...

Mr. Yadav said boys and girls fall in love but due to differences they fall apart later on. “When their friendship ends, the girl complains she has been raped,” he said, stressing the need for changes in the anti-rape law.

Good job, India. Another example of exemplary thinking.

Is that guy's position in the party really "supremo?" Indian english reminds me of something you'd pick up from random scraps of tabloid magazines.

The tabloid comment is interesting. I didn't think of that before. I just ran across this image in the Times of India, which is India's #1 English language newspaper. Read by serious people. Not a tabloid.

But they're making a big deal over the fact that the guy went to vote wearing pink. He is married to Indira Gandhi's grand daughter.

Is that dude on the right his wife?

It looks a little like Andy Samberg.

I know that that is just the english spoken over there, but it seems concocted from old scraps of printed words, some folded over, so that you miss words here and there, with a lot of "dramatic" words thrown in. Like it's made from a mix of old magazines and pizza boxes.

I really don't understand how it came to be that way, if this is just direct translations from local languages or hindi, or if just being "speedy" is praised there, or what, but to me, it sounds like people trying too hard to be "cool" and really just sounding incredibly lame.

It's like, someone was brainstorming, "hmm, what should I call people in my new political party?" Then he looks over, and sees an old taco wrapper, and goes "I know! Supremo! That sounds serious and strong. People will vote for us."

wow.. looking at the case that was the catalyst.. Three men got the death penalty for gang-rape..

The timeline is pretty amazing for this case, I wish trials here went as fast:

August 22, 2013: Crime committed and reported

August 26, 2013: All five men arrested

September 19, 2013: Four men charged with a 600 page charge sheet (the 5th was a minor, tried separate)

October 14, 2013: Trial begins

Late Feb 2014: Trial Ends

March 20, 2014: All four men convicted

March 21, 2014: All four men given life sentences

April 4, 2014: Death penalty given to three of the four men

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

I don't know why it is so, but FWIW Indians are very dramatic. Our family lives are OMG, so much drama. Everything is drama.

The faster you go, the more mistakes you're gonna make. The death penalty is not something to be taken lightly, IMO.

Agreed - I'm against the death penalty. This is still seven months from rime to conviction which seams reasonable to conduct an investigation and trial of this type.

He forgot to add. In some cases.

The title of the thread is wrong.. The case which the politician referenced was not about a woman being spurned or lying and he never made that claim. He simply believes rape is not as serious crime as the punishments would imply - he thinks the anti-rape laws go to far. He also wants to add in laws to punish those who falsely accuse someone of rape. I have no fault with his second argument though if I were in charge it would be low enough on the list it may not ever be addressed.

It's easy to be dramatic when pink trousers make you go "omgs!"
