Filing my taxes MFS. Need to get certified copy of Thai wife's passport to apply for ITIN with IRS W-7 form. Anyone have any advice? Will the US embassy in Bkk do this for a Thai passport? Are there any certified accepting agents in Thailand? Please help.

If you are filing MFS you don't need to get an ITIN for your wife. An ITIN is only necessary if your wife is going to file a joint return with you.

Is it a benefit to file MFJ on you taxes (for most it is)? If so, why not file an extension. Gives you until October 15th to file. If your wife is here by then, she will get a SSN shortly after arrival in the USA. Beats the hassle of going the ITIN route (I have done both, first year did the ITIN - went to Embassy and had a copy made and certified). The second year waited on the SSN.

Rules have changed since we did the ITIN. Check out the website and links. The link to the state dept doesn't have tax info. It appears the certified copy would have to be issued by the Thai agency that issued the passport.
