Baseball legend Hank Aaron doesn't think President Obama's political rivals are that much different than the racists who threatened Aaron with death as he approached Babe Ruth's home run milestone.

Aaron told USA Today in an interview published Tuesday that he still has the hateful letters he received as he closed in on Ruth's career home run record 40 years ago this week. He said he keeps them as a reminder "that we are not that far removed from when I was chasing the record."

"If you think that, you are fooling yourself," he said. "A lot of things have happened in this country, but we have so far to go. There's not a whole lot that has changed."

According to Aaron, things are not that much different today — the country's first black president notwithstanding.

"We can talk about baseball. Talk about politics. Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he's treated," Aaron said.

He added, "We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts."

...ain't that the truth. I'll be honest though, if you had asked me 20 years ago if there would be a Black president in my lifetime I would have said hell no. So yeah I believe that race relations in this country will get better each generation. It's up to each generation to recognize the past but also not be bound by it and carry the torch of tolerance, and progress forward.

Anyway about Hank Aaron he is the homerun king in my book. Barry Bonds is a cheater. I have a signed black and white photo of Hank Aaron addressed to me from when I was a kid. My uncle did PR work for the Reds and met him at some point and got it. I wonder if it's worth any money :)

I used to have his card way back in the 70's along with other greats...until my dad threw away the grocery bag I kept them in, thinking they were junk. :(

More evidence of another diversity fail.

I mean here you have a hero, a base ball legend who at 80 years of age has lived better than 99.9% of other Blacks (and whites) around the world (hardships included) and yet he sees the place who brought all that to him as desperately needing change.... a flawed society..... one where half the people wish to doom him and his people and would wear a hood if they only could.

No country on earth has done more to further the cause and elevate a minority as has been done right here and how does our national hero sum this country up?

" "We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.""

Hank why don't you point out the country we should be more like... who we should emulate in race relations?

This is exactly what I have been saying.... "it doesn't get any better than this" when it comes to race relations.

I don't care how much white people grovel or spend or give up, it aint gonna happen or it would have already.

So I advise people to do what I do, treat everyone with the respect.... but loose this notion that we are ever going to build some color Blind society,.... it is a goal that has never been reached anywhere and won't be here anytime soon.
