Hello all,

We are preparing to submit our i-485 application, but I am stumbling on what is probably a very simple matter. I am unsure which surname to use! I am the beneficiary, so all of my immigration documents, so far, have my maiden name (including my passport). Now that we are married, I wish to use my husband's surname. We do have our marriage certificate to show that we are married, so if I were to use my married name on the Adjustment of Status paperwork the marriage cert would show the reason for name change.

I saw some people say (on another forum) that we can use our married name, but where there is a section that says "Other names used", we would write down our former name. But - I cannot see any space on the i-485 to record any other names used!

Help! What did you do when you filed for Adjustment of Status?

Use your married name in all AOS forms. This is normal. For the I-485, "other names" is not asked, but there's a section there that requests for your I-94 information, in which you give your passport or visa name / maiden name is reflected.

You can find the "All other names use/ All names used" in

-2nd line of G-325a.

-Field #2 of I-765

This is where you write your maiden name.

3. Form I-485: Petition for Alien Relative (note: use the non US Citizen spouse's married name on this form and list previous name/names)

The place on the I-485 where your maiden name would be listed is in Part 3 where it asks you to list your name as it is exactly from your I-94.
