There is a difference between critizing the nation and criticizing its policies. Some Americans seem to have a problem differentiating between the two.

could apply to any (democratic) nation (the word American could be replaced for Canada, UK, etc.).

Also, to amend--in democratic nations, one generally has the right to criticise the POLITICIANS as well as the policies.

(an unfortunate exception to this is, and has been, if a member of a political party actually criticises or even disagrees with the party leader)

Actually when Americans have a problem separating a criticism of a nation from criticism of its policies, I think its is , in a maybe warped way, of just how much democracy is rooted in our thinking. WE have such a strong identity that our government is us, that to criticize the government is seem by some as an indirect criticism of the people.
