This is interesting.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Denmark#Religiosity

I can't help but think the lack of religion is the reason for their happiness.

See Danno, I can play your game. I suspect if I look at some of the most miserable places, I bet they're pretty religious folks. Just a guess.

Of course when we talk about Denmark and in fact all Scandinavian countries we can't help but notice they all have one thing in common

Want to guess what that is?

Nordiske-flag.jpg

Bingo!

We have another example of a foundation based on Christianity.

Now of course thats not a cure-all for every nation but for those nations that embraced those principles until it became like the air they breathed... we often see greatness.

Nations founded on Atheism as we all know became horror shows.

No doubt the question presents its self.... -as some of these countries are leaving the faith behind... what will come of them? How long do the vapors last?

Demographers tell us they now have a very low birth rate and while they thrived for so many centuries under the Christian faith now just a few decades free from it they are already in decline, with little hope of turning it around.

Who will pay for the socialism as the scheme crashes?

It's rather sad when one looks past the short term.

However, lets not lose all hope for God has a history of gathering wayward sheep back in once they fall flat on their own.

All Westernized ideas of happiness. Countries who are truly happy will never make it to this list because they are unhappy per Western standards.

I have met some people from these Scandinavian countries who are quite unhappy. They are sick of their government telling them what to eat. They are mad because homeschooling is illegally. They put really high taxes on sugary foods or foods the government deem unhealthy.

People should stop imposing their idea of what happiness is on other people.

Where do you get your theories from Danno? Clearly you do not have an academic approach to research, hence these theories you present lack any kind of coherence of thought. I just wonder if you invent them all on your own or do you get fed them from some fundamentalist teacher?

Nice pictures though, it's like reading a third grade project reading these posts :)

The reason is really quite simple. The issue of human and civil rights is not one to be voted. I am sure a vote on Jim Crow laws, back in the 60s would have perpetuated segregation.

Prop H8 should have never been on a ballot and it would never be were it not for the money the Mormon church poured into their misinformation campaign - the California Supremes had already ruled on the constitutionality of same-sex in the state. In a roundabout way the Mormon church and other zealots did us all a favor with Prop H8. Were it not for it going all the way to the SCOTUS we would not have had the repeal of DOMA and the domino effect it has had on the other states.

Incidentally the same is true of abortion. It has been ruled over 40 years ago.

What is really fascinating is the obsession some show with the private lives of others.

If you are against abortions, don't have one. If you are against marriage, stay single. Let others decide on their own. It is quite simple, really. Everyone wins.

I'm having a moment of deja vu sounds like I've said this before but I agree with you Gegel.

Civil rights should never be a ballot issue. It is, at least in words, woven into the fabric(s) of our nation...The U.S Constitution, The Bill of Rights, The Declaration of Independence.

The studies are not really looking at happiness in those terms, they are not measuring personal happiness, but rather the freedom to enjoy life because they are not burdened by poverty, lack of job opportunity, lack of social mobility, lack of affordable housing, lack of a structured society where people know and care for their social network. Just an fyi, in a country that enjoys universal suffrage, government doens't impose anything on anyone, it's a decision that is reached by concensus. Surprisingly perhaps, in a lot of European countries (but not all) the government is pretty functional, the electorate do get the things they vote for (and they know the policies they are voting for, not just the 'slogans'). This is one thing I find extremely annoying about the US. Despite universal suffrage, the elected governments barely function at all. You can lay a lot of the blame on the fact that there is too much slush money floating around, restrict the amount of money paid to and swilling around the personal pockets of the political elite and a lot of things would change for the better.

They may have been founded on Christianity, but over time realized the silliness of religion and abandoned it. Hopefully one day the U.S. will follow in their footsteps.

I think you have challenged my GPA before.... lets just assume you are smarter than me and get on with the points I raised.

Becareful what you wish for my friend.

If rights don't come from our Creator (as Jefferson wrote) then they come from Gov't.

That's the problem though, you base your conclusions on false premises. For a start, deal with the fact that European civilsation is not a product of christianity. Christianity was just one of many religious movements that had their day in Europe. Christianity was superimposed on the more ancient cultures and traditions. However, the history and development of Europe from ancient to modern times is an enourmous subject and not really possible to sum up in one little post. I would encourage you to actually read up on it a bit rather than making these falsie statements. History is interesting but reading your garbled interpretation is painful to behold.

Rights do come from the people. We decide what is an isn't acceptable. God really has nothing to do with human rights.

You talked about all the different religion in Europe and how they actually shaped it.... yet when each country chose a flag.... why the cross? (for starters)

Sorry I'm not one of those folks that assume that because one of the founders of this country said something 200+ years ago, that it's going to relevant until the end of time. Like said, if people want to believe in whatever they want to believe, great. Just don't force it down my throat or use it as some kind of basis for legislation. We have enough issues in this country to be introducing fairy tales into serious debates.

Because they didn't know any better. People wised up over time. Plus they were probably sucking up to their religious base, just like they do today.

Of course I was referring to " inalienable" rights.

No, it's fine you have feel how ever you want on the matter, I was referring to the founding of this nation, not some hypothetical late night college chat.

"The founders" were quite clear, where the derived guidance, inspiration and foundation from.

It can be primarily be broken down into two cities Greece and Jerusalem.

It doesn't bother you that Denmark, the country you named has an official religion?

Lutheran?

Why would it bother me? Texas has an official state flower: Bluebonnet The official state bird is the Northern Mockingbird.
