As long as a white felon has a slightly better shot at landing the job than a similarly qualified black candidate with a clean background (that's the status quo in America today), there's institutional racism that puts certain minorities at a clear disadvantage. It's like the whole argument that I hear some Whites use and it starts out like this:

I'm not a racist. I never owned any slaves. I don't agree with racism. No one in my family owned slaves we came here only a couple generations ago.

My response is that that is good. No one is saying you are a racist. But the fact remains that you have inherited the benefits of your past ancestors (or those that look like you who resided here) actions. That is the definition of White privilege. So it really boggles my mind when some people try to deny this. I'm not saying you need to pay reparations or do 60 hours of community service in a Black persons home to make up for some past transgressions (though if there are any volunteers I could use assistance with some landscaping). I'm just saying recognize it exists and factor that into your critical thinking when certain issues arise.

The same applies to women and sexism with Male privilege.

As a man I recognize that yes I have benefited in life because of whats hanging between my legs. I don't go out and treat women poorly, discriminate against women, or whatever other poor treatment. Today the President signed an executive order to help even the playing field when it comes to protecting women seeking equal pay for equal work in the workplace. So yes Male privilege exists. I never asked to be paid more than a female counterpart. It just happened. It's not even my fault really. Like I said I have never viewed myself as better than a woman but I acknowledge it exists and I make an effort to treat women as my peers.

Now that you mention it, it would seem only fair that I would have some privilege, I have had generations of ancestors working and passing on lands and knowledge and all that.

I hope to be able to pass privilege on to my off spring as well.

I would have no expectation of the Chinese if I arrived on their shores of not having some privilege or head start over me.

and if they let me stay, hopefully with each generation we too would build up privilege.

We are a family based society, don't forget that. My parents worked hard for my benefit. hopefully I'll take that and do the same for my kids, setting them up in business or sending them to the best schools I can afford.

One of the unique things about the USA is, no one is shut out from accessing this, even if the road might be a little more steep for some it is being accessed by all walks of people and it is a beautiful thing to watch.

Why 30+ years ago? Was there a defining moment 30+ years ago that you feel White privilege disappeared? So you admit that it existed at one time, correct? I'm just trying to understand your 30+ year ago reference and would like for you to tell me what event occurred that ended White privilege.

As far as your banks comments, I was only naming examples where institutionalize racism exists which reinforces a racial majority dominance over a minority group. Don't really care about whatever else you said because it is irrelevant to my original point - but ok I guess you wanted to get that off your chest?

We don't live in a post-racial society. Since Barack Obama became president I have glimpsed a mere taste of how bad this country was and still is in many respects. The day after he won the election, all the racists came out like cockroaches.

We have a federal government that has enforced laws that have been passed to prevent discrimination and certain forms of institutionalized racism. We have laws that vigorously fight against and provide stiff penalties for people who commit hate crimes. There wasn't some moment where those in the majority oppressing minorities woke up and said ok we're going to stop. There was no altruistic gesture to say hey we are going to allow Black people the right to live anywhere they want, even as my neighbor. No.

To be bluntly about it........People died, bled, marched, passed legislature, campaigned to teach those White racists in America the meaning of c i v i l i z a t i o n.

I know as a nation we have come a long way. After all we did nominate a Black president. That's not really my point and has nothing to do with the definition of racism and exactly what racism is.

Basically, what you are saying is that you (Blacks) reserve the right to and complain about being oppressed indefinitely.
