A street party turned into a violent melee that injured six police officers in a California beach community Saturday night.

About 15,000 people -- many of them students from nearby University of California, Santa Barbara -- crowded the streets of Isla Vista for the annual "Deltopia" celebration when "a major disturbance broke out," according to a news release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

Ban Isla Vista ! :(

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I saw a riot break out once in Montreal after the Habs beat the Bruins in a playoff series.

Thousands of people just walking as a mob. It just kept getting bigger and then more violent until they started turning over cars and breaking windows. Finally the cops cleared the streets.

I saw someone climb up on a hotel marquise and set the American flag on fire, it was surreal. I must have taken 300 pictures.

You could just feel the tempo building and you just knew it was going to explode at some point.

It must be a scary scene to be at the heart of something like that.

I can see how mob mentality takes over. It started out as a celebration and then it just kicked into high gear.

It only takes one idiot to smash a window and then someone else thinks it's cool and then its on.

I saw protests turn into riots also in Haiti. Its weird because they had the same feel but totally different pre-cursor. One was celebratory and one was civil unrest but after a while they seemed the same.

Gratefully, we've never been in those situations. I'm trained to handle riots with the appropriate gear. But you're right about how quick it can become violent.

I have had civil disturbance training as well, and my old unit of eight plus years had some experience dealing with riots in Los Angeles and elsewhere. I learned a few things, one of which is police do not do riot control well. Police do crowd control well. Police are good at intimidation and barricades. When the intimidation no longer works, and the barricades fail, the police tend to run away. That is when the crowd is at its most dangerous. That is when the burning and looting begins.

If you don't hold the line, that's what happens. We trained for it in Sicily, but never put it to practical use.

Were you stationed at NAS Sigonella?

I spent weeks dropping concrete barricades on Mt. Etna in '91 (or '92). They made us sleep on the racquetball courts.

Yep, was at NCTS Sigonella back in 2002-2005. You're talking about NAS 1. I was stationed in NAS 2. I've been to Mt. Etna and climbed it twice. Small world.

Bunch of thugs.

I see what you did there.

I knew you would.

Why would you assume such a thing? Is it because I'm black? Reported. :dancing:

Defending your ship/base against the locals in a little different. DIP missions are not fun. I prefer not to fight with my back against the wall. Police tactics are all about containment, either about keeping people in, or keeping people out. Our tactics were about control and dispersal. That is much easier to do if you have mobility, rather than being forced to occupy a fixed position.
