Ukraine's internet romance industry is booming – despite the unrest. But after chatting online, travelling to Odessa and wooing women on flashy dates, most men fly home alone and far poorer. Are they unlucky in love, or have they been scammed?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Hmm well, I found my fiancee in the Ukraine. I was a member of one of the marriage broker sites, but was not successful that way. However, I never went on any of the romance tours. I did go over there and meet 3 women that I had been writing to. That didn't turn out so well. So I don't know if maybe people's expectations are too high sometimes? I mean, if you are dating locally, doesn't it take a a lot of unsuccessful attempts to find "the one?"

Later I met my fiancee on a different dating site. I went to see her and here we are.

The broker site mentioned in the article does not have a good reputation.

I met my girlfriend on a different site that had a very small registration fee

(roughly the same as I spent on a domestic dating site) and there were no

additional charges ever. They even offered free translation services if it

was necessary.

Its sites like that that give international dating a bad reputation.

I'm not sure what's worse: Anastasia date (clearly a major scam) or the SugarDaddyForMe a link to which was also given in the article. Gahhh. I clicked on it. Scary stuff (sickening testimonials too).

I think there's a lot of options of meeting CIS women on free sites - like facebook or vk.com (Russian social network). Sites that go specifically after dating make me somewhat suspicious. I watched a documentary on a tour exactly like that that was taken by 15 foreigners, mainly Americans, to Odessa. It was called "Love translated". One of them later got engaged to the interpreter (who was married at the time i think, but anyway). None of the other romance lines worked out.

I think it's really like it said in this article: men expect someone who looks like a model, doesn't bother them, entertains, cooks and w/e. One of them was 'teaching the girl a lesson' by being rude to her because she got upset over him not giving her flowers. I mean, ok, maybe expecting flowers that frequently was unreasonable, but 'teaching a lesson'? Seriously?

I'm the beneficiary.
