Applying for jobs while on a 2 year conditional Green Card

Hi VJ Members.

I had a successful AOS interview last month and have received my green card. I am studying hard and taking extra driving lessons in preparation for my theory and practical driving test (hopefully this week), and once I have passed I will start applying for a job. Its very exciting.

I just wanted other peoples experiences on applying for jobs while on a 2 year conditional green card. Has this been an issue to potential employers or ever been an issue for any of you when applying for a job at all? And would it be advisable to make it clear to a potential employer that I am on a 2 year conditional green card?

I would love to hear your feedback and experiences.

Thank you (L)

They don't even ask about your status when you apply for jobs. Status is not a matter that comes up during interviews or the applications process. You apply and if you qualify, you get hired for the job. The nitty-gritty issue of status comes up at pre-employment when they make you sign the I-9 form.

For the most part, conditional residents are like permanent residents (except you have to remove conditions 90 days before your 2 year GC expires) and have the same benefits as permanent residents. Employers don't make a fuss of that and hire based on qualifications so no worries.

Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist heir die Frage.

Well, according to law you are permanent resident and can apply for jobs, nobody can deny your basic rights.

No employer can discriminate you on that basis. You write residence status in US as 'permanent resident' in resume. You don't tell any employer that its two year conditional green card.

But what i have learnt by my own experience and experiences of all other who went through this process,in starting the road is steep.

No experience in US,no credit history and fresher to country may delay hiring process,no matter how much years experience you have got from home country. No employer is gonna tell you the reason of not hiring but when they run background check everything comes in it and they are hesitant to give chance to freshers.

But only key to success is keep on trying hard, try to volunteer for couple months and write that experience in resume. Also meet as many people as you can and try to socialize with local people.

When i came in i signed up for meetup.com and went to meetings of like minded people for over 2 months. It helped in connecting with local people and make good friends. Also you are involved in many activities and don't feel alone.Socializing and networking along with right qualification helps to grab opportunities.

The worst thing that can happen is you get a suave HR person who notices that your GC expires in 2 years and when that time comes asks you to supply another unexpired immigration status document for the I-9. You just take in your new GC. Most HR people do not know to look at the status and see if it is CR- or if it is IR-. The only difference between the two is that the CR has an expiration date tied to the LPR status and the IR does not. Your LPR status expires when your 2 year GC expires whereas there is an expiration date on the 10 year GC, but your LPR status does not expire. That is the only difference between to two and most people do not know that.

Apply for all the jobs you want.

Just use DL and SSN card for proof of employment. Employer's HR can't demand your GC for proof. I never used my GC for employment purposes. Only updated HR when I naturalized and then they re-did the e-verify again with my DL and SSN card.

Thank you Flora01.... the points you have highlighted is most certainly what has already crossed my mind.

Prior to moving to the states I had 3 years in HR, and also lots of PA/secretarial experience under my belt. Failing that I have 10 years of retail and management on my resume also.

We are desperate to move at the end of August to a better location into a larger home for my step-children and me finding employment by this time is a huge factor as to whether we can achieve this..... im hoping my (rather posh LOL) English accent will get me hired very quickly in Mississippi :content: ..... here's hoping anyway.

Thank you everyone for your responses... I cant wait to get back out working... fingers crosses there is a job out there with my name on it xx

If you have a "clean" SSC--i.e. does not have "VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION ONLY" printed on it--they have to accept a DL and SSC. You are never required to show the GC unless the SSC has those words on it. I had a person in one HR department insist that I show her my SSC when I was showing her my US passport which is a List A document. She finally accepted it when I told her that my SSC was in a safety deposit box over 1000 miles away and there was no way I was going to be able to get it. The HR person does not get to pick the documents you use for the I-9 form.

I realize it is easy to just show the GC, but it is like giving into a search by a LEO. Unless I am required to--i.e. warrant in hand--I will not consent to a search of my vehicle as I really hate that statement, "If you are innocent you should have nothing to hide." To me it is about the rule of law and not giving up any more freedoms then I already have. Same for those that want to see documents. They should understand what the requirements are and I should not have to educate them.

My employer asked for mine because I was on an H1B before and my SSN does have the DHS authorization thing on it. So they needed to know that they can let me legally work pass my H1B expiry date. I also needed to let my employers know I wasn't on H1B anymore since the H1B is under their name.
