Have you tried getting a secured card? I was also denied for several so I took out a secured one with Bank of America. I'm not sure if that was what did it but within a few months I had a decent credit score.

Try with capital one. It is harder to get credit from big banks unless you establish a credit score more than 700 and over 2-3 years.

Or maybe try with charge cards first. Start from small credit allowance and that will improve your credit score gradually.

You want secured credit cards that will;

  • report to the 3 major credit bureaus
  • have the lowest to no processing/application fee
  • have the lowest annual fee possible
  • will allow you to qualify for credit line increases based on your payment history
  • hopefully will offer an unsecured card automatically after 1-2 years.

Try to keep the monthly credit limit usage to a minimum. I once read on an Equifax or Experian blog that not exceeding 10% helps the FICO when building credit.

Once your husband has even one secured card with about 6-12 months of payment history, apply for a gas card from one of the major gas retailers (Chevron, Texaco, ExxonMobil, Union76, BP, Shell, etc). After another 6 months, apply for a card from one of the major retail stores, especially around the time of the holiday shopping frenzy. By then, with timely payments and zero balances, his credit should be in great shape.

You could also try adding your husband as authorized signer to your current credit cards. My husband added me as authorized signer to his Chase and Citi credit cards in 2012. A year later, I applied for Citi card and I was approved for 7K credit limit and I have an excellent credit score at the moment.

That's great, but I wonder if there are other factors? I added my husband as an authorized user to my Chase card and he still doesn't have a credit score. I think we will need to go with a secured card.

Do you wanna try Firstpremier bank ? Very high rate and very low credit line, but if you are only looking a start to build a credit then maybe you wanna give them a try. I had them before, and closed it after I got approved in Citi bank and the Discover Card.

P.S.

Yes I also had a job when I applied to those credit cards.

I am not absolutely sure how this works. I got a job three months after my husband added me as an authorized user to his credit cards. My employer did a credit check on me and my report stated that I had an oustanding credit background, which only showed three month-old credit history. I don't believe that I had a credit score at that time but I was starting to build my own credit history. A year later, I started getting credit card offers. Then, I applied for Citi and I did it online. I combined both of our incomes since I added him as an authorized user.

Try a secured card. I managed to get an unsecured one with a $500 limit based on what i earn and i have kept it in good standing and i appeared on credit reports within a month. You can check your credit at CreditKarma for free. Mine kept saying i didnt exist, then when i got the card it said "Thin file", then after a month i had a score of 697.
