I had my interview at the Los Angeles field office this morning. The appointment was for 8:00am. I arrived at the waiting area exactly 30 minutes before. I got called in at 8:10 by a female IO.

She asked for my drivers license and green card and made copies of them in the hallway on our way to her office. In the office, I took an oath to tell the truth and then sat.

She asked for how long I have been a permanent resident and with my answer being 3 years she asked for evidence that my husband and I are still together. I brought out my pile of documents and offered them one by one. She took the ones that I didn't include in the original application packet (Our 401K information showing each other as the beneficiary, work benefits elections showing each other as dependants, vacation details after originial application), then she took the most recent of the documents I had already sent(household bills, bank account statements, mortgage statements), everything else she asked me to keep including the tax returns from the last 3 years, she said she has those already.

She asked whether we have children together and I said no. Then, basically we went through the application page by page. We lingered a little on the trips taken. I listed just the one trip that I had taken in the past 3 years since I became a permanent resident. She asked how many trips and I said 1. She asked whether I was sure about this and I was panicking already. I answered firmly yes. Then she said she has many entries that came back in my report. Turns out the background check returns all trips in the last 5 years so all the trips I took between 2009 and 2011(which were many, although each lasted 2 weeks or less) when I was jetting in from Dublin to visit my husband here in the US came up too. So I explained calmly that I thought I was supposed to list just the trips I took since I started living here, not the ones I took to visit the US as a tourist. We moved on.

We completed the application review and I signed in a couple of places that she pointed out to me.

The English test was next:

  • READ: What is the largest state
  • WRITE: Alaska is the largest state

Civics Test next:

  • What is the name of the national anthem?
  • What is the rule of law?(*Note that she required me to say all 4 statements: Everyone must follow the law, leaders must obey the law, government must obey the law, no one is above the law. I paused after the first one, unsure whether one was enough and she said "go on..." :) )
  • What happened on September 11 2001?
  • How old must a citizen be to vote in the presidential election?
  • Why do we have 13 stripes on the flag?
  • What ocean is on the west coast..?

She typed for a minute and then said Congratulations, I'm recommending you for approval. She handed me the sheet of paper that showed I passed the tests and I'm recommended for approval. Told me the next oath date for LA is Dec 19, that I might be scheduled for that one or if its filled up, I might be scheduled for the next one in January.

That was it. I was out by 8:42am.

Almost there...hoping for the December oath date, want to be over with this immigration journey by the end of the year.

Good luck to everyone!

Thanks a bunch. Sure things will move along soon enough, 5 months or less is more of an exception than the norm for the downtown LA office.

And by the way, I was panicking because I had my laptop and was wondering whether it won't be allowed into the building. It was allowed and I even managed to get some half hour of work done before I was called in for my interview. :star:

I would like to share my husband Interview experience and timeline. This might help anyone who goes for interview in Holtsville NY office.

My Husband applied based on 5 year rule. His Interview was on 10-Dec-2014, 9 Am, He got the LIRR train and reached Patchogue. The train supposed to reach by 8 as we checked on the schedule but it reached only by 8.25 AM. Its really a deserted place. No cab. From Patchogue Holtsville office in 10mins Drive, Then he called for a Taxi and it came only by 8.53, and Finally he was able to reach the office by 9.

Security check is easy and He gave the name to the receptionist and waited for his call. Till 12 they didn't call his name, Then he went to the receptionist and asked, she has told she ll check again. Again no response. By 1 He went to the receptionist and shouted that he is waiting from morning and no response and he wanted to talk to the higher officer. She said she ll check again with the supervisor. Then a Black lady came and said someone will call him soon. After that an American Guy, around 55 to 60, who felt difficult to breath came out and called his name around 1.30 PM.

He asked all questions such as how he came to USA, how he got the green card etc. We were well prepared with the document set, so gave everything he asked. My Husband changed his name after he got the green card and he got the replacement card as well. The officer asked about it again and again. He told that they don't have any record related his name change in his file. Then he got IRS related documents, our marriage certificate, his name change document, birth certificate. Everything. And by seeing our marriage certificate he has said this doesn't look like an Original. We got married in Trichy India, how in earth an IO officer able to say by first look its a duplicate? Miracle. My husband told all these are Original documents.

Then he grabbed all the documents asked him to wait and went to another room, then in few mins he came back and said lets have your test. Then he asked civics question, reading and writing. Finally said you passed the test but I cant take any decision right now. Then He marked A Decision cannot yet me made about your application but passed all the tests. Asked us to wait for the written decision.

We don't know how long its going to be for them to reply back and why they made him to wait such long. He doesn't have any criminal records on him. Everything is clear. But still why they say like this? I am seriously got confused. I have read almost everyone's experience but ours looks weird. Even after we gave all the documents they asked still they not able to take a decision.

My Husband time line

05/28/2014 - Mailed N-400

05/29/2014 - NOA Date

07/01/2014 - Biometrics Appointment

07/03/2014 - Inline for interview scheduling (was stuck in "Initial Review" for over 3 months!)

10/31/2014 - Scheduled for interview

12/10/2014 - Interview - Decision yet to be made :(

Did your husband list all his names, current and previous, on the N400?

The delay could be because they may have only performed the background name check on one name and not gne other.

Another reason is that most immigrants wait until the N400 to chsnge their names if they want to. The officer may have not been used to your husbands case and may just have wanted to check with his supervisor.

Finally, was there anything about your case that would make him suspect the validity of your marriage? Have you lived apart, have seperate financial assets, etc? I'm wondering why he would question the marriage certificate. Where either of you divorced shortly before you married each other?

He mentioned both the names in the N400.

He married in 2004, a girl not a US citizen and got Divorced on 2011. We both married in 2014 April and its been just 8 months. I am also not a US Citizen. He got his green card through Asylum.

I am not sure that caused this delay. We are fighting by fingers crossed.

Ah I see. So he's not applying based on marriage.

I'm not very familiar with asylum cases, but maybe they go through a little extra scrutiny?

The only thing you can do now is wait for a decision. If you haven't heard anything in a month, I would call them to follow up.
