    • Yes, because that means only 4 million in the rest of the country and California is electorally irrelevant.
    • No, California has the most electoral votes of any state and can not be ignored. California sets the agenda, for better or worse.

You should move to Europe.

He is English, or British of some sort and he has the right to the opinion that UK healthcare is ####### compared to the US system. I just find it hard to believe he's actually had reason to use the US health service for anything. I haven't had to use it for anything serious, but so far everything i have had to do has been costly, difficult to negotiate, hard to understand the application of the costs and arbitrary in function. I have used the services both with and without the benefit of insurance and whatever way I look at it it sucks compared with using the NHS.

I never said that.

Ok, the NHS can't really ever be 'fully functional', it is a victim of its own success in many ways. It is run by people and there is necessarily a bureaucracy and a political component. The parties on the right do tend to want to break it down and render it more like the US system, which really would be a great shame if they succeed beyond the cosmetic, in my opinion.

I was actually thinking its strongest point in relative terms would be efficient.

The similarities are that without major reform both will collapse.

Sure but if the NHS were to be funded at levels that the US health care system is, the NHS would have many more decades of life in it than the US system.

Unless you are rich, the US health care system sucks because the care you receive is based on the bottom line of some corporation. It matters little if your treatment is adequate or not, what matters is whether it is profitable. This will not change unless we change how our country looks at its citizens.

In terms of percentage of GDP? Well yes.

But that maxes out at 100%, somebody needs to find a way around that.

In terms of percentage of GDP, in terms of cost per capita, whatever. The point being that while all health care systems face cost containment challenges, none faces that challenge as severe as the US system.

No system is as wasteful as the US.
