Bringing my mom to live with me in USA someday... Is it possible?

Hello, visajourney friends!

I have a concerning in relation to my mom! I'm her only child and I'm leaving her alone here in Brazil to live in the USA with my future hubby. So, I'd like to know if it's possible for me to bring her to live with us after three years of Green Card.

I've heard it's something difficult to get and that it takes too long! :unsure:

Can someone help me with information, please?

Yes, it is possible, but your timing is a bit short--you need to add in the time for the naturalisation process (after which you can petition for your mum as immediate relative).

Yes, you need to be a PR for 3 years (less 3 months) before you can apply for Citizenship.

Once you apply for naturalization, it takes about a year to complete (possibly less, but check your District Office timelines). You do not become a US citizen until you take the oath (there may be a wait after your interview for an available oath ceremony).

Once you are a citizen, you petition for the parent. Parents are immediate relatives, like spouses, so you can expect a similar timeline as you would for a spouse. I-130-->visa about one year, maybe less.

So, that would be about 5 years after you become a Permenent Resident. You will not be a PR until after your AOS inerview and approval, which can take 3 months to 3 years, depending on your District Office.

You should budget 6-12 months (from app to oath) for naturalisation process, plus another 6-24 for the I-130 (for immediate relative) petition.
