No charge for the card. Just time a the office.

We went 6 weeks after Anna arrived and 2 weeks before we got married.

I read somewhere it makes it easier. It was easy for us.

The number stays the same.

After the wedding you should get card in mail. Then you can go get a state ID / DL permit open bank account in married name with copy of marriage license. And change name on SS card. See my timeline for tips.

Personally I would wait until after the ceremony. Just easier than getting the name change done.

Actually here is what happened when we tried AFTER the marriage.

11/3/2006 Married in USA

11/9/2006 - Applied for Social Security card in Anna's maiden name. We tried to have name changed right then but clerk said we had to do name change with INS. The get Social. Clerk said wait to get social in maiden name then bring marriage license in.

(Bring marriage license and passport with I-94 card)(30 Minutes)

Your mileage may vary...

Another couple from VJ said adviced me that I should apply for my fiance's SSN as soon as he gets here. But then again, his name won't change after marriage.

If you want her SSN card to have her new name then it's probably better to wait.

As I wrote

The clerk gave us a hard time about doing the name change with the intial SS app.

Was no big deal just had to wait a bit longer and go back...

Sling,

Applying for the SS card before marriage, and in the maiden name whether before or after marriage, avoids potential problems in many SS regions. Get the card now and change the name on it whenever.
