During my first visit in the US, Atlanta POE, there was an Italian gentleman in line before me. I heard the Officer calling for an interpreter and he was escorted to the tripod. It didn't seem to be a problem.

I was thinking about the same thing for when my family comes to visit. I think I will just give them a note saying that they only speak Greek for how long they're visiting and what is the purpose of the visit....and I'll be there, waiting for them, of course :)

when my inlaws visited they had a printout of their general info, like Harpa said. My father in law knows very little English and my mother inlaw, none.. others on the flight who came through with them who spoke English and Arabic were more than willing to help.

Your parents might ask for help with translation other Italians standing in the line at POE or you can write them a note with basics information and your phone number.

Having come in to Newark at the same time as a flight from Rome, I know one word no Italian knows - Queue.

Fortunately I had plenty of time, quite amusing watching, lots of sharp elbows.

Italian speakers should be around, staff, or maybe other passengers can help. People who don't speak English visit the US every day. But, another thing you can do to help, is send them something to print out that says basic info about them, perhaps, what language they speak, who they are visiting, how long and where they are staying, etc.

My mom visits us once a year and does not speak English, I used this advise every time and she had no problems.

Have them fly with an italian airline company, more chances to have lots of italian speaking people that may be willing to help at POE!

Do not worry there is no interview for VWP people just stand in line for passport control and go forward when its your turn. They will have someone there who speaks German and Italian(on the same flight) so don't worry and tell them to not worry or lie to the officer. Having come in and out of our country a couple of hundred times at least I have never seen where a customs or immagrations official could not be understood or did not understand who he was talking to.

GOOD LUCK AND DON"T WORRY
