Asking for some advice about health insurance.

I arranged my health insurance before I arrived in the States. I went with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, they seemed to offer the best cover for a reasonable cost. It was all done while I was still in the UK and started the day I arrived here.

I had read that some insurance companies won't insure a new immigrant before they've been resident for 12 months. I take it from your post Lansbury that BCBS doesn't have this restriction? I was just wondering as I was going to get a quote from them this week. I just got a new job and they are saying $240 a month for my husband to get insurance with me, but ehealthinsurance shows a quote of only $135 for blue cross.

Depends on age...I am tacked-on to my wife's work-related BCBS policy and pay $400 a MONTH, not including dental or optical. I am 59 though...... Good Luck !! Neil.

That seems high. I took out a new BCBS policy for myself, I'm 58, and with dental included pay $321 a month.

Indeed what Boiler says is usually very true. But it does show that sometimes what is accepted as being the most cost effective way is not always so, and a little research might pay dividends.

Premiums for health insurance can vary widely depending on where you live in the country and also, if it is through an employer, how much the employer contributes and how many people in the company, etc. Just make sure you do a lot of research and realize that sometimes you have to make a choice sooner rather than later because of deadlines on open enrollment periods etc.

As far as I understand group plans are equal for everybody, regardless their age.
