Shipping Sewing Machines?

Wow, I hadn't thought about this before...

My wife is a fashion designer. She has several sewing machines. I am now wondering if it will be cheaper to ship these items or replace them, for her to use when she relocates to the USA.

I have no idea what these machines would cost to replace. I'd thought I'd see what any women (or men) experienced with sewing machines out there would do in this situation?

Actually, I was in the sewing department of Wal-Mart (ick, I KNOW ) only yesterday. The cheapest machine was around $120 and they went right up to around $800.

I mean, it depends if she has professional machines (i.e. very expensive). Plus you would also have the voltage difference to consider of course...(if there is a difference in Colombia).

The voltage could be a problem, but that would be possible to change or fix over here.. Since she is a professional with several machines my guess would be that it is cheaper for her to have them shipped here.. Some machines (i'm thinking sergers and embroidery machines) can get very very pricey.. well over $1000... She may also be used to these machines and how to use them properly and likely wont want to learn how to use 5 new machines again (especially since some of them are very very complicated!!) You may also want to contact a sewing machine repair shop to see if it is possible to convert the voltage. Personally I would likely want to take my machines with me if i was her..

I been sewing for about 42 years; the machines become like your right hand. I say ship 'em, and don't do it on the cheap. You want them to get here and in one piece.
