healthcare - medicaid and green card

hi,

i recently quit my job (h1b to green card through marriage). I will not work this upcoming year so to pay for the health insurance is too much for me. I called healthcare and they told me that i may be eligible for medicaid. I was wondering how this will affect my wife that signed the affidavit and if she is expected to pay back and how much it is if anyone knows.

Traditional MedicAid laws vary from State to State for GC holders.

As far as Obamacare is concerned you have to have had a GC for 5 years before you can qualify for MedicAid, assuming your state is expanding MedicAid under the ACA.

hmm, thats not what they told me on the phone. they said it would be fine. Does anyone if my wife would have to pay a lot or how much?

You are not eligible for medicaid. If you use it, the gov can sue your wife to pay it back. Get your own insurance.

Check out the costs of short-term health insurance, that may be a good way to save you some money.

Depends on what you mean by short term.

You need Obamacare type cover.

also, isn't it cheaper to just pay the penalty? i am not going to be working so it seems that paying the penalty might be cheaper. and if i get a travel insurance that would cover the risk of paying a lot if something catastrophic happens.

Dont rely on travel insurance, it's not meant for people emigrating, and they max trip length may be 60 days or similar.

I love this part. Had a job, QUIT, does not WANT to work for a year (vacation I assume), now wants US taxpayers to foot the bill for him to have insurance.

Is there any reason why you won't be working??? I know so many people who are looking for jobs...and you voluntarily left one?? Why should tax payers pay for your medical treatment if that is the case??

I agree. Unless there's a compelling reason you shouldn't work, then you should be paying your own way and not expecting the tax payer to cover you. I thought that as a conditional resident your spouse is financially responsible for you? Not the state?
