Hi all,

I need help figuring out what I will do with health insurance when I move to America on my K-1 visa.

Hopefully if all goes well this would in a couple of months. But i'm wondering if I can keep my health insurance from the Netherlands until I adjust my status?
(Don't I have to even?) If not, what do I do?

Thank you,

Kelly.

Most people get on their spouse's health insurance once married. Doubt you can keep Netherlands insurance, but that would be a question for the Netherlands.

Buy a travel health plan in the interim. There are several out there relatively inexpensive, cover most things except pre-existing and will allow direct billing which means you don't have to pay and try to get money back.

Netherlands insurance may cover or partially cover some things but you would have to check with them. It will not be ideal as you would have to pay first and then submit a claim. We checked into this type of scenario with Canada before and they reimburse but only up to the limits of Canadian coverage, which is completely inadequate for the US healthzilla system.

I agree though, get on your spouses plan or get your US healthcare plan as soon as your eligible.

thank you both for responding first of all !

I think I will try the travel health insurance. We are a same-sex couple, and she lives in a state that does not allow our marriage, so getting onto her health insurance (which is through her work) is not an option, right?

Not necessarily. You will be legally married, even if the marriage is from out of state. That would be a question for the insurance company and the employer. No employer is required to add spouses, but most offer it.
