Hello, I am the American wife of a Canadian citizen. we just got married a few days ago and plan on applying for his permanent residency next week.

we are both 18, soon to be 19. we decided after 2 years of dating that we would get married, he proposed with a bracelet he had been wearing since about a year before our relationship started (one that he told me before we started dating, was reserved for the girl he would spend his life with), something that meant alot to him, when we were 17 years old and it was a really sweet proposal (:P just ask if you want the story) but because we were 17 we decided obviously it would be best to wait. one year later I moved in with my Fiance and we had a blast figuring out adult life together. the fall after we turned 18 we decided we didnt want to wait anymore and wanted to get married, but because of our lack of money the plans of a backyard wedding in Washinton (my home in the states) fell through. finally this spring we decided that we would just have a small private wedding just the two of us for now, we decided the big fun one with my family could happen later on.

our wedding was very private and small because my husbands family disowned him for choosing me over them (yes they forced him to chose) and my family lives all the way over in washington state USA (we're in Ontario, Canada) we're also not the most social people and so we have very few friends, none of which we felt we knew well enough to be at our wedding so the only people attending were our two witnesses (the closest friends we have who still arent very close) I didnt get a dress because I didnt want to. we said a few sweet vows in front of a justice of the peace and bam we're married.

we decided just before our wedding that moving back to the USA would be the best plan considering we had no family, or friends up here in Canada and we felt that me being able to work would very much improve our situation, so we set to work gathering information and forms and documents until now.

I have my I-130 packet filled with everything I hope we need sitting on the desk and all I can do is panic. I am so scared that like everything else in our lives something will go wrong and we'll be stuck here so far away from home for the rest of my college education.

I just want someone to tell me that our marriage wont raise any red flags and that things will go smoothly. but I also want someone to let me know what kind of issues they had so I can avoid them. anything to get my husband and I home to his new family. please help ease my panic before I die of a heart attack before I even file the paperwork!!!

Small weddings are fine, informal weddings are fine, youth is fine. The only issue I see (perhaps 2) is income and domicile. Send away the I-130 package and figure out the rest while you're waiting. There is a thread in the Canada regional forum about domicile.

Btw I've been married for almost 2 years and have yet to meet any of my inlaws beyond skype due to distance.
