Hey Guys!

I hope that your visa journeys are going well!!!! So here's my question: I am trying to plan a wedding without being able to set a date and have no idea how to go about this- what do you suggest?

My fiancee and I both live in New Zealand. We sent our I-129F in on 3/17/14. We have already received our NOA1 today 3/26/14. We are traveling to my Fiancees home in Brazil in August for his birthday and are trying to be back in Colorado for a wedding by the first or second week of October. My whole life, I have always wanted an Autumn wedding, which happens the last few weeks of September/first few weeks of October. I want to book our venue, as this is a very busy time for weddings, but I am terrified that our visa might not be approved by then...

So far our process is going very fast, but we struggling with how to inform family from Brazil of a date so that they can plan a trip to our wedding.

Do you reckon we just book the venue and hope for the best? If we book in the beginning of October, that will give us a 7 month total window of processing time. Gah this is scary!!

Any ideas?

I truly wish you all the best!!!!!

Cheers!

Desi

We just set two wedding dates and we waited to decide them until after my fiancee had arrived from abroad. The first was the legal wedding required to satisfy the conditions for adjustment of status within the 90 day window. The second was the real wedding for all our friends and family.

For the first, we just waited till I could get time away from work and then asked some family members to come to city hall and then go out to dinner. After that legal marriage, we just acted as if we were still engaged and set out to plan our real wedding, which we ultimately decided would need to wait almost a year.

I can't imagine trying to plan the whole real wedding ahead of arrival, honestly. I know people do it, but it seemed like too much hassle and risk for us, given that the 90 day window may wind up a moving target and I don't much like throwing deposits away.

I wouldn't bank on getting (legally) married this fall because you never know what might happen. NOA1's usually show up pretty on time, but you never know how long it'll take to get your NOA2 - if you're lucky, under a month. But there are still people who have been waiting for over 5 months. Then when you get your NOA2, you'll still have to wait for NVC to forward it, wait for the consulate to notify you, get your medical and all done, wait for the consulate to set you up with an appointment. NZ might be a little faster than other consulates, but again, nothing is for certain.

Scenario 1 - if you don't get your visa by the fall. You COULD always "get married" but just don't make it legal (don't sign anything) and just have the big wedding in October. Set the date. Then fly back afterwards and await for your consulate interview. The risk in this is that the POE officer might not let you in since you are filing for the K1, but unapproved, and telling him that you are here for your "wedding".

Scenario 2 - If you get the visa by the fall. Yay! Have your wedding! But this is tricky because you really just don't know at the moment if you will. And you run a risk of this not happening and having all your relatives in Brazil buy a ticket.

Scenario 3 - Could you plan an Autumn wedding in Fall of 2015? Then do what I&B said.

Courthouse wedding when you arrive in the US, your Fall Wedding Extravaganza next year... make it legal first, and worry about the fripperies afterwards. That way you don't have to fret about dates and how long the visa is taking etc.
