A lot of what is being said is really generalized...no matter where one is, people can have bad behavior or attitudes, not just because they live in the North or the South.

There are many southern cities with Indian restaurants(for instance), with many races mixed together, and that don't fit into the stereotype that a lot of ppl are talking about.

I'd like to know what cities people lived in that experienced such back woods behavior as people staring at short hair on women all the time...I don't doubt it happened, but it would happen in any back woods town across America and in other countries too. The North has their own type of country-folk and small rural towns...my great grandfather lived on a farm in Pennsylvania in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure that there, people would also look weird at someone who looked a bit different. And there are lots of small towns in Upstate New York too.

I've never lived in a small town in the South, but in moderate to big places. The place is Georgia I was referring to is Athens, which is probably the most liberal town in the state you can find, besides maybe Atlanta. I've also been in Atlanta, Savannah, Birmingham, Memphis, Knoxville, etc., and I run into the same issues there. Of course there are ethnic restaurants everywhere, but the existence of ethnic food isn't the same as being in an open-minded place.

You're right: close-minded idiots live everywhere and in any state, but I've never encountered any of these issues in cities of the same size in all the other places I've lived in the US and elsewhere. And I'm still shocked that I considered central Indiana a step up from Georgia in terms of open-mindedness or rather in terms of an attitude of tolerance when it comes to outward appearances which might not go much deeper than that.

I don't mind Southerners; I just mind Southern attitudes and they make me feel uncomfortable. If you don't have that problems than that's good for you, but it doesn't mean that it fits everyone. :)

Edit: To say something positive, grits rock and BBQ is awesome. There are some things I miss about the South, but food is not everything...

Come up north!

We have cold weather, high property taxes and insane auto insurance rates! It's awesome, I love it!

It's just the reciprocal in the south. Hot weather, high sales taxes, and still pretty bad car insurance rates.

I can't say I'm a tanorexic. I don't tan. But I am going to miss the beaches and water after the move. Here in Canada, I'm on the coast. Ocean view from my computer window, lake is 5 minute walk away, dozens of lakes, rivers, and various spots all along the ocean to swim in.

In Texas I'll be 60 miles from Galveston (or as I call it, the chocolate milk ocean). The water is brown! I can't seem to find any public pools there either. Don't Texans swim?

I have been in the South now since May.

You couldnt find nicer people. Everywhere you go someone says "hey" to you.

Exactly.

Driving around everyone waves to you.

Not to ruin the moment, but if this is what you're referring to, it ain't no waiving...

I have a friend (yankee) working in Tennessee and he says the locals are nice to his face but don't want to socialize with outsiders outside of work.

Something wrong with your friend then. Tennessee and Tennesseans took me in no questions asked when I arrived there from Germany. Took my wife in just as well when she came from Ethiopia. Had no probem with this mixed couple. Can't say the same about the midwestern state of Ohio or the city of Cincinnati.

I don't mind Southerners; I just mind Southern attitudes and they make me feel uncomfortable.

I'm a Southerner. What is my attitude? I am a Southerner, so I must be exactly like everyone else, so please tell me what my attitude is.

Point being: generalizations not only suck, but in many many cases are just dead wrong.

Love the south, it has a real charm. I just don't like all the republican jerks (not all republicans are jerks) and bible thumpers

the biggest republican jerk i have ever met works with me here in philadelphia

the accent is what gets me the most. not the refined "southern gentleman" accent .... the lazy "ah don't know no bettr" one

what about ebonics? or that north philly accent?

there are uneducated folks no matter where you live

maybe it's just memphis, but i find the racism horrible ... too many bad, dangerous parts of town ... ugh!!!

i work in a center city hospital and the racism i see there (all around... not just white/black) by far outweighs anything i saw in 30 yrs in the south (alabama - heart of dixie)

Love the south, it has a real charm. I just don't like all the republican jerks (not all republicans are jerks) and bible thumpers

the bible thumpers get me too

also, the most obnoxious and tireless bible thumper ive ever known works with me... shes literally an evangelist minister of the catholic faith
