Im in the south with a brown boy and we dont get any negative reactions. Im happy here.

same here

It really depends on where in the south one is. I'm in Florida and I am hardly ever around true southerners, most people around here are from up north originally! Sujeet and I have not experienced negative reactions around here. Though if we drove inland to a little town, it might be a different story. When Sujeet and I went to Tennessee last summer, it was like we had to drive north in order to enter the south...Florida is really different than Georgia, Tennessee, etc.

i agree ... "the south" i'm talking about doesn't really include florida or louisiana .... i'm talking about tennessee (where i am. hooray.), arkansas, missisippi, georgia, and alabama. it's a whole different country.

My personal experiences tell me that the race experience is very different in the South. More annoying stares, more stupid questions. Up North, racism comes in the form of calls to employers that don't get answered, smarta$$ remarks. People don't stare as much up here though, which I like. In some places down South it feels like they've never seen a brown man before except on CNN's special terrorism report :)

I'd agree if you are equating The South to Buttfuck, AL. Fortunately, there's more to The South than that. Of course, The North is also larger than the greater NYC area. There's many stares to be had in the The North as well. :P

My dad's family grew up in Philly, and my grandparents were very racist in the 60's/70's...after becoming Christians in the 70's they stopped being racist(yes after that they felt they were wrong to be racists) and now my grandmother loves Sujeet more than me I think!! :) My dad and his sister never were racist tho even though they grew up hearing rude comments about other people by their parents.

My mom grew up in NYC, and her older brother is very racist, and she never was...don't know if he's cooled down on it or not, we don't keep much in contact with him(he never keeps in touch with my mom, not a very nice man). I'd love to see his face when he found out I was marrying someone from India. Not sure he even knows!

I guess the north has changed but there still are racists up there, just not as high a concentration as in some southern places.

Come up north!

We have cold weather, high property taxes and insane auto insurance rates! It's awesome, I love it!

actually, at the end of august, i AM going up north!

Well on behalf of all the taxpayers of the north, I welcome you, our latest addition. May the taxes and insurance you pay make our schools better and our roads safer.

i won't have a car, so i won't have any car insurance :P and we'll be in an apartment, so property tax is still a way away

hey neighbor!

freeloader! :angry::P

Just means the property taxes are added to the rent. The owner of the building still has to pay the taxes.

Lived here (the South) my entire life and I love it :)

Although, where I live isn't a "typical" southern town, we're full of Engineers and Rocket Scientists, so things are a bit different from the more rural areas.

And it has been my experience (and from what I've heard from Northerners) that racism is bad across the country, it isn't only Southern.

My personal experiences tell me that the race experience is very different in the South. More annoying stares, more stupid questions. Well, seeing as my high school was probably over 60% black, I think that you can't make that generalization for the entirety of the south (nor any region). I'm sure there are plenty of places in the North that are all white, or all black, or like my city with a good mix of everything, just like there are in the South.

the south like the north has many things to offer...

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

All in all, after living my life in a northern type of southern place (haha..??), I don't think I could live in a truly southern city. I have a friend who moved to Gadsden, Alabama because her fiance lived there. When I have visited there...it was reallllly different than here.

Racism can happen anywhere...

My mother-in-law told me this about something that happened on thier vacation years ago...

My in-laws were on vacation with my mother-in-law's sister and her husband (they are all Mexican Americans) ... They travelled all across the United States.... They stopped in Seattle, Washington and planned to stay awhile.... They stopped at this restauraunt to get something to eat. They were there for over an hour and nobody served them... They saw other people come in and get served right aways but they totally ignored them... They even tried asking someone who worked there what was up but they ignored that too.... so finally my in-laws just left and went to and grabbed some Fast Food somewhere.... They said they left Washington right aways.... instead of staying a few days like they had planned....

They said the whole time they were in Seattle they felt like they were being stared and gawked at...

No insulting Alabama :P In all seriousness, of course there are cities here that are horribly racist, but my Govt teacher in high school told us about how his family in Michigan were some of the most racist people he had ever met, so all of these generalizations to certain areas are pointless, it's everywhere.
