You're right: I don't live in Indianapolis, let alone the East Side, but further north; but I've sure seem more mixed race couples in Indiana than in Georgia despite the fact that Indiana is a white state. I'd also be the last person to claim that Indiana is a liberal state or people in Indiana are by default not racist, but it is by far not as segregated as the places I've been to in Georgia or Alabama.

Michael Jackson was from Indiana if I'm not mistaken. The poorest ghettos can be found over there. No wonder he became crazy! :dead:

I've been living in MEMPHIS since i got married in 2004. I hated it at first, and now, well, im just learning to accept it...

I'm originally from Canada, more precisely, from MONTREAL, where you hear all kinds of accents, see all kinds of races, cultures, colors, religions...And i loved it! So when i got to Memphis, where everyone is either pure Black or White, i felt kinda like an outkast..

I was also freaked out and couldnt sleep for days when i came because I was hearing of crimes everyday on T.V., something i was not used to while living in montreal.

The closest place ive visited which made me feel at home is Texas.

Things i hate about the South: Accent (one thing i'll never master), close mindedness, no multiculturalism, sometimes racist

Things i like about the South: Courteous, THE WEATHER! (even though as crazy as it sounds, i miss shoveling in Montreal)

It IS unfortunate that those issues still exist, but they exist in so many other places. As for the accent...we can't help it...its a cultural thing, just like any other culture. Not everyone in the south is closeminded, and here where I live there is a lot of multiculturism. Yes, racism still exists and is pretty strong in the South, but not everyone is a racist. :luv:

I can't stand the accents in Quebec..... and I really can't stand that most french people outside Montreal never even attempted to learn english. Good thing I am fluent in both eh

Fuzzness, I've heard that some of the maritime provinces are bilingual and some are single language only. True? If so, which are which?

Comparing Quebecois and French is like comparing British to Canadians. Only the language is the same (sort of). Wasn't Louisiana a French colony at one time? Man, I would have never had a problem with immigration

have come across people who have thought that just because i have a southern accent... i am either a very loose woman... or very stupid...

never held it against them tho...

on of my pet peeves is how racism is still prevelant ANYWHERE...

Lynne I agree with the accent thing. I have met people and when they hear me speak at first think stupid. Then again my husband loves my southern drawl. Lots of sterotypes about the south and have found racism is all over not just confined to one spot.
