so tired of the south

I don't mind Southerners; I just mind Southern attitudes and they make me feel uncomfortable.
I'm a Southerner. What is my attitude? I am a Southerner, so I must be exactly like everyone else, so please tell me what my attitude is.

Point being: generalizations not only suck, but in many many cases are just dead wrong.

You tell them, Tracy. She hasn't been to Indianapolis' East Side, I'm sure...

 No I haven't. But I am originally from Iowa. Which surely means that I have rows of corn in my backyard, have never seen a black person and certainly have never met anyone Jewish........

You mean people in Iowa don't all have corn in their yard? :o

:P

THings I specifically HATE about living in the south

-bible thumpers

-ignorant attitudes

-ignorant accents

-people with rotten teeth

-lack of produce in the supermarkets

-bugs

-confederate flag flying

-NO racial diversity outside of black/white

-no Indian restaurants!

-everything is far away

Things I like about the south:

-Barbeque

-beaches

-warm winters

and that's about it!

-bible thumpers -----> from what i have seen... more catholic in the north, more protestant in the south

-ignorant attitudes -------> obviously that is NOT limited to the south

-ignorant accents -------> again, not limited to the south

-people with rotten teeth --------> kids in nj have to take vitamins with flouride supplements to protect their teeth (oh, and meth users with nasty teeth are also everywhere)

-lack of produce in the supermarkets -------> thats why theres farmers markets... superfresh stuff, before it gets shipped north

-bugs ---------> where can you live in america that has no bugs?

-confederate flag flying -------> agree with you on that one

-NO racial diversity outside of black/white -------> depends on where you live in the south... out of bham, there is great diversity... a huge medical university there draws asian, indian, european, and african

-no Indian restaurants! ---------> taj india in bham is awesome... along with the others there

-everything is far away ----------> its nice to go outside and actually see stars and be able to breathe without breathing in exhaust

this thread offends me deeply in that i think ppl are still quite free with being prejudiced against the south... and it all is perpetuated with all this ####### that is being flung

and only then, will you find the meaning of happiness."

the south is fine, people are very nice indeed but moving from Europe to Oklahoma was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge change!!!

Oklahoma, OK!! Yeah, it's ok alright but not the best state to have fun.

There is sooo many rednecks, I know a guy who builds his house entirely out of wood he saws himself. No darn fake woods only good ol southern trees, all done by himself...Goodness, maybe in 5 years he'll be done

Oh, wait I forgot to add:

things move at the speed of molasses - we live in the Low Country of SC and call it the "slow" country.

And the drivers here are the worst I have EVER seen.

there is something wonderful to say about not being so stressed out from flying at the speed of light all the time

come to nj, where most car insurance companies wont even dare to do business because of how bad the accident rate is... oh wait, thats in the north

the south aint that bad.. Im from a big city (Guadalajara).. when I came to Lumberton NC, approx 20,000 people or less lol.. i was 'what the hell am i doing in this ranch'.. but u know, people are nice.. it's true, there's the ignorant ugly teeth redneck.. but u know, they dont hurt.. they are afraid of the different and have a bigger probability of messing with one of themselves than with a foreigner.. besides.. these ignorants dont live long, by 20 21 one of them died in a car accident for drunk driving speeding going to myrtle beach, or got shot in a stupid situation..

but most people are very nice.. food is great.. and actually.. even if the mix is only black/white, i can say it has a more relaxed attitude.. I went in summer to MO.. columbia was pretty cool.. but kansas city.. zomg, it was the whitest city i've ever seen lol.. besides people werent as friendly as in the south..

its true.. everything's far away.. but if u come from a big city u appreciatte what is to drive and see endless pieces of nothing, full of trees, crops, little lakes.. we who live in the south forget how other cities or countries try to preserve those resources, as in the south it looks like theres infinite resource (come to NC.. we have a LOT of water).. i like cheaper rents.. nice cities.. southern cities are cool cities because of their growing diversity.. atlanta is nice.. raleigh NC is the hippest souhtern city because of its college like atmosphere from chapel hill and a big diversity ( and a lotta mexicans).. other cities are becoming also important because of businesses and people moving from the north..

about the confederate flag.. its true that we usually associate with racism and slavery.. but.. the dixies are very proud of the southern culture, they also have a heritage and customs.. that. yeah might be weird, ignorant,or old skool.. but its theirs, and they like to preserve it..

I have been in the South now since May.

You couldnt find nicer people. Everywhere you go someone says "hey" to you.

Driving around everyone waves to you.

here in the south jersey/philly area, the most you get from other drivers is the bird and some choice words... all for actually obeying the traffic laws

the ppl in the south, from my experience, are warmer... my grandfather (in a small town in alabama) died a couple of weeks ago, and i was touched to the core by how many folks came to the house and brought food... when the funeral procession was going to the cemetary, other cars in both directions pulled their cars off the road and turned on their lights until the procession passed... those that were walking, stopped and took their hats off... its called respect... ive not seen that in the north

now, what did my coworkers and friends up here do for my loss? about 6 ppl said 'sorry to hear about your grandfather'... thats it... no card... nothing... ive worked and lived here for 3 1/2 yrs, so its not as if they barely know me

ppl can talk trash about the south all they want, but my momma taught me to be warmer, more polite and more loving than 98% of the folks i have met in the north

A lot of people in the south are very ignorant towards the north. "Ah don't want no f'ing yankee as my president" type of attitude. Makes me double glad to be Canadian. Besides, I hate the yankees too. Steinbrenner is a moron.

Yep, anytime I've seen a funeral procession all of the drivers have always pulled over, even on the busiest of streets (my city isn't that small either). I can't remember who I was with but they had never seen that happen before, to me it is just what you do out of respect.

HOWEVER, my second favorite place I've lived is Georgia... the south is awesome!

Georgia is just peachy. :D

I must admit, Georgia has some great places...here where I live I have the mountains...some gorgeous scenery. However, I do love Nova Scotia too...and hope to live there one day. :luv:

eek! I didn't mean to offend so many people... and yes, my generalizations are just that... random observations that I have made. No, not all southerners are that way. Yes, some cities have areas with diversity, farmaers markets, etc, etc. I'm sure the south is great for some - but not for me! Give me the big city, honest, rude people, exhaust fumes, and snow anyday!

Don't worry southerners - I'll be outta here before you know it!

And the bugs - there are not sand fleas and GIANT roaches up north!

I don't think my town got the memo about the "new" south :D

At home when there is a funeral. The police escort the family to the grave yard. Everyone pulls over on the side of the road to show respect till the family have gone by. Has always been that way.

Know what I hate? When non-northeasterners call us all yankees! Thats an old term that now, to us, refers to a baseball team, not a region.

Well I'm going to Indiana which is supposed to be (acording to Dave) the most conservative state in the US. He says people there are racist but I don't really care. Everyone I want to like me there seems to love me and treat me very well.... I have great friends and a great family waiting for me there so I don't really think about it.

I hope that, if they look at me a lot when we go out, they at least think I'm pretty!:lol::lol:

But seriously... I know that some people will stare at me and all but oh well! I can stare at them too and make a very awkward situation out of it! LOL
