NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Aboard a guided-missile destroyer docked at the world's largest naval base, a sailor was fatally shot and security forces killed the lone suspect late Monday, according to the Navy.

The suspect was a civilian who had access to be at Naval Station Norfolk, spokeswoman Terri David said early Tuesday. She said she couldn't say whether he had permission to be on the USS Mahan, where the male sailor was shot about 11:20 p.m. Monday.

No other injuries were reported, and the base was briefly on lockdown, according to the Navy. David would not describe any other circumstances of the shooting but said the scene was secure.

The Navy will release both men's names once their families are notified, Davis said.

Looks like the guy disarmed the quarterdeck watch and then shot him with his own gun. The guy didn't have his own gun.

I was surprised as well, especially since it's not a nuke and it was in the yard.

When we were in port overseas we always armed the brow sentry but not the quarterdeck.

Anyhow, it wasn't a good day at work for our shipmate.

It's like any other base, if you have an ID you have access. Sounds like this person had an issue with a sailor.

So anyone with any ID, like a state ID, can go on military bases? That's a safe plan.

Sorry, I should have elaborated. You need a Government ID card. It's called a CAC(Common Access Card). This person could have been a Civil Service worker(GS) or a Contractor.

DOD employs a huge number of civilians that have access to installations. DOD also employs a huge number of civilian contractors that have access to installations.

Marvin, just out of curiosity is there much gang activity anymore? It used to be an issue in Norfolk.

From what I've heard it's still there. When the GW crossed decked from VA to Japan, the entire base went on high alert. I've heard about in-fighting and gangs from different sections on the ship. It's so stupid. Got IT's and YN's claiming sets.

Not sure if I can, the few so called gang members were white kids from middle class families. One was on my FB page throwing up signs and using the N-word. He's been defriended a long time ago.
